Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

As a free after school orchestral music training program, KIC uses music to reach children, many who have been sidelined by poverty and adverse childhood events, to reduce traumatic effects and increase high school graduation rates and access to post-secondary education. Because we are free to all, KIC serves to level the playing field. According to the 2018 Expanded Learning Opportunities Guide - A Toolkit for School Districts in Washington State, parental income is one of the primary factors determining who gets to participate in Expanded Learning Opportunities (ELOs) and to what extent they participate. Affluent families spend nearly seven times more on enrichment per year than lower-income families; thereby further widening an "opportunity gap" - a systemic inequity in education that structurally disadvantages certain demographics of students (students of color, low-income and disabilities). KIC closes the opportunity gap by developing academic and social competencies, and preparing every student - regardless of background - for career, college and life.
