14 Pews Film Academy

The 14 Pews Native American Film Series grew out of a love for film and a desire to increase the number of venues for Native American filmmakers in Houston. The energy that drives this film series is based on a commitment to affecting the world through artistic collaboration and a belief in the power of film to inform, affect, and stimulate vastly different groups of people.

Population(s) Served

The Environmental Film Series is a monthly film series. The films speak to a wide range of environmental topics and connect audiences to student organizations, community activists and other experts in Houston who work on these issues.

Our Music Film Series is a terrific mix of new heart-pounding music films and classics. We’re opening with the Beatles’ timeless, psychedelic Yellow Submarine. And the summer wouldn’t be complete without my personal favorite Stop Making Sense—which we promise to play LOUD, as Jonathan wanted. In addition we look forward to screening Festival Express, I love the way Janis Joplin’s performance brings you to your knees. In addition, we’ll be screening Grace Jones: Bloodlight and Bami along with Dave Chappelle’s Block Party, and I Am Trying to Break Your Heart, the rarely seen classic about the band, Wilco.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Our goal is to utilize the arts as a tool to promote civic discourse and stimulate dialogues around the most pressing and complex issues we face in contemporary society.

We have several new programs that have a strong educational component as well as a performance and community engagement component.

We are focusing more on education and community engagement through the arts.

We have accomplished this by inspiring numerous teachers to bring some of our works to their schools to open up dialogues on race. Furthermore, 5 of our past students are in universities studying film. In addition, we teach filming and then have hired our students to be Teaching-Assistants for our summer film workshops.
