Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
WORD operates 5 main programs. Family BASICS provides housing counseling, family advocacy, school-liaison services, family strengthening, support and parent training to the families of homeless students. Futures is a family support and prevention program offering career readiness and parent education to pregnant and parenting teens & young adults. Family Resource Centers work to strengthen learning environments by helping parents, community members and educators create partnerships that support learning, literacy and leadershiPLEIDES, and other support across the state for families and schools. Mentors in Violence Prevention is a training offered to high schools and community groups. It teaches a unique way to help students of both genders to learn how to appropriatley intervene in any situation where they feel that sexual harrassment or discrimination is occuring against themselves or anyone else.
Families in Transition (FIT)
• Families in Transition (FIT) works with families that are homeless or at-risk of being homeless. FIT strengthens and supports families by helping them gain the knowledge, skills, and resources they need to provide a home environment that encourages family members to reach their full potential. Homeless families and those in transition can access family advocacy, housing counseling, and rental assistance.
FUTURES
The Futures Program uses a youth development approach to help teen parents develop the skills needed to gain economic and family security. Futures works with pregnant and parenting youth through age 23, both those who are still in school and those who have dropped out. The program provides information, support, education and leadership development to assist young moms and dads develop healthy relationships, build parenting skills, continue with their own education, and work towards economic security.
Parents As Teachers (PAT)
The Parents as Teachers (PAT) Program utilizes a nation-wide evidence-based curriculum to provide meaningful parenting education to at-risk families who are enrolled in the program. PAT offers regular home visiting for families where educational activities for children are modeled and taught, and developmental screenings are conducted for children. Group activities are held periodically to facilitate community-building among enrolled families.
Summer Arts and Leadership Camp
WORD’s Summer Arts and Leadership Camp (SALC) provides a safe, structured, educational, and stimulating environment for children ages 10-14 who have been affected by homelessness or are at risk of homelessness. During the 6 weeks of camp, we expose the children to a variety of activities and experiences which they might not otherwise have access to. SALC is a free camp for the families and children it serves, and provides an outlet for youth who are suffering from the instability of homelessness.
