What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Courageous Kitchen works to mitigate the issues of poverty, malnutrition, and lack of access to education among the most marginalized in Bangkok. Most notably, urban refugees seeking asylum in the city. Many of these asylees arrive traumatized by the circumstances of their flight, to find the government actively jailing and refouling documented persons of concern. Thailand does not recognize international laws protecting refugee rights, forcing people to eek out a living in the shadows. This is especially tragic for families who have fled rural areas, and arrive with larger than normal household sizes, and no opportunities to support themselves legally.

Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Free Saturday School

Free English Classes, 40-80 children each day, volunteer run with the support of adults in the community we serve in urban Bangkok.

Population(s) Served

Cash assistance provided to families at risk in Bangkok. The assistance arrives in the form of small stipends to help families with housing and food, their biggest expenses. This is especially important for single parent households, and those with more than 5 family members. Some aid may arrive in-kind, in the form of food stocks such as rice, oil, toiletries or other important items.

Population(s) Served

Courageous Kitchen provides vocational training to a small group of young adults at risk in Bangkok. The aim of this training is to build their confidence, and prepare them to lead and support their families in the future. The participants lean language skills, culinary skills, and important social skills useful in a variety of vocations and contexts.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Courageous Kitchen hopes to inspire marginalized youth through the power of food. This is done by providing food aid and education. The food aid is a lifeline and assist people meeting their basic needs. The education program teaches youth English and culinary skills concurrently, with the aim of increasing nutrition, self confidence, and developing employable skills.

Our recipe for creating transformative change is to feed the hungry, restore dignity by funding basic needs, and a provide free education program giving people the skills they need to lift themselves out of poverty.

Courageous Kitchen currently receives no institutional support. This neither includes governmental aid, nor regular donations from faith based organizations. Instead the organization has turned to the social enterprise model, creating a business to support the costs of programming for the needy. The business provides cooking classes to tourists visiting Bangkok, which supplements income from donations. To reach more communities, however, the organization must grow the number of supporters in the form of grantees, donors, and business customers.

Courageous Kitchen has provided 500 hours of English language instruction for 3-6 year olds in our pre-school serving the children of asylum seeking refugees in Bangkok. In 2017, Courageous Kitchen distributed over $10,000 in direct cash aid to vulnerable families, and invested over $10,000 in education, and culinary skills training for the same community. This includes 2,200kg of rice distributed, positively impacting the lives of 300 people. In 2019, we hope to expand our supporter base to be able to share the hope and courage provided by our activities in the kitchen with more people in Bangkok.
