What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Cambodia has historically been among the countries with the highest childhood mortality rates and despite recent improvement, rural areas where most of Cambodias population lives - significantly lag behind urban areas. Cambodias eastern provinces, including Kratie, Stung Treng, Mondulkiri and Ratanakiri, are some of the most neglected when it comes to healthcare resources, especially for children. Eastern Cambodia continue to have very high rates of childhood mortality, largely driven by poor access to care due to it's remoteness, poverty, and large number of ethnic minorities whose health-seeking behavior is different from the dominant Khmer population.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Neonatal Program

When Chenla was established in 2016, 1 in 16 children in Kratie province did not survive to their 1st birthday. Since its inception, 1,700 neonates with immediate life threatening conditions have been directly saved. Chenla’s educational and training efforts have undoubtedly saved many more. A disproportionate number of patients are from minority ethnic groups rather than Khmer, Cambodia’s main ethnic group. These marginalized groups have long had much poorer health outcomes and depend on Chenla. Chenla’s plan for neonatal care is threefold:
- Provide high quality, compassionate care to all neonates in need who are delivered at Kratie Provincial Hospital and also who present to Chenla from outlying facilities;
- Provide preventative services in the form of education and training to health centers and outlying health facilities in Kratie;
- Strengthen public facilities in Kratie through the carefully chosen distribution of equipment and supplies urgently needed for neonatal care.

Population(s) Served
Infants and toddlers
People with diseases and illnesses

Chenla's outreach program was established in 2018 to efficiently provide treatment education and prevention in some of our poorest and remote communities. To date, over 40,000 children and families have received our outreach services. Chenla’s outreach activities remain essential for education of the community and increased utilization of Chenla’s resources by those who need them most.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Chenla Childrens Healthcare aims to deliver sustainable, holistic pediatric care and clinical outreach in rural eastern Cambodia. Working in partnership with the Ministry of Health, Chenla provides patient services to children in need, strengthens the local health infrastructure, and improves health worker education in the region. Strengthening the social contract between the local community and the public healthcare system forms the foundation of what we do. Currently fully operational in Kratie and Mondulkiri Provinces and with a neonatal ward in Stung Treng Province, we seek to replicate to further areas where the needs are greatest.

Chenla Childrens Healthcare is part of a public-private partnership and integrated within the Royal Cambodian Government Referral Hospital system. Chenla works within the pediatric wards of the referral hospitals to greatly strengthen the government systems ability to provide compassionate, high-quality care. We work to improve health worker education in the region by providing opportunities for further training domestically and abroad. We also improve the healthcare infrastructure by working with the government to invest in updated facilities and equipment.

Utilizing existing government facilities, medication, supplies, and staff, combined with Chenlas NGO resources, we provide compassionate international-standard medical care to children suffering from infectious disease, febrile illness, premature birth, and a broad range of other pediatric diseases. We follow Cambodias health equity fund (HEF) system which provides free or discounted healthcare to eligible families. Chenla collects revenue from donors, reimbursement for care provided to HEF patients, and patient-paid fees. We provide care to a diverse community, including ethnic minorities, migrant workers, undocumented immigrants and many others in this remote region. No child is ever turned away.
