Programs and results
What we aim to solve
In 1999, less than 0.2% of writers of color were represented in writing workshops across the country. The mainstream literary establishment was not equipped or willing to read or guide writers of color. VONA changed all that.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
VONA/Voices Writing Workshops
Voices of Our Nations Arts Foundation established in 1999 is a community-based organization that puts writers of color, their narratives, voices, and experiences at the center of all conversations. VONA supports individual writer growth, creates platforms for community engagement rooted in social justice, and provides workshops and mentors focused on expanding writing opportunities. All writers-of-color may apply to VONA workshop. Experience, publications and degrees do not influence the application as much as an exhibited desire to develop as a writer. In the application process, the writer is asked to respond to questions about personal and creative expectations and their passion for writing.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Since its inception, VONA has facilitated increased access to writing programs, inviting established writers from different backgrounds and experiences to talk about who they are as writers of color and how that influences the stories they choose to tell. Over 2,400 writers from around the globe have participated in VONA since 1999. More than 400 have published books and received literary prizes and international recognition. We seek to continue empowering and valuing the voices of writers of color for years to come.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We support writers of color through our annual one-week workshops as well as one- and two-day workshops across the country throughout the year. We seek to partner with other like-minded organizations to promote the work of writers of color.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Our Interim Executive Director and Interim Program Director take care of day-to-day operations and programming, while our Board of Directors is active in volunteering to help VONA meet its goals.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Since 1999, more than 2,400 writers from around the globe have participated in VONA. More than 400 have published books and received literary prizes and international recognition.
