Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Horse and Hound is working to address the problem of off track thoroughbreds being taken to kill lots after their racing career is over. We work with racetracks, owners, and trainers to encourage them to donate the horse to the rescue so we can retrain for a second career. We offer an option so the horse is never at risk. After rehabilitating , if needed, and retraining, the horse is then put up for adoption.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Our goal is to never have an off track thoroughbred remain in a risk situation. We work to rehabilitate and retrain for a great second career.
We also help to reduce the number of senior dogs euthanized because no one will take them.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Horse and Hound Rescue intakes as many off track thoroughbreds as it can safely retrain. We let the horse tell us what it wants to do; trail, jump, event, whatever. By providing a good second career, these horses will not wind up in a risk situation.
We also provide a sanctuary for senior and handicapped dogs.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
The founders of Horse and Hound were in the thoroughbred business for thirty years. In that time, contacts were established and a great reputation was created that gives both the racetracks and the trainers confidence in allowing us to retrain their off track thoroughbreds.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Horse and Hound has adopted over 100 off track thoroughbreds in 2020. With our great volunteer network and our reputation as an honest rescue, we are reaching more people and more horses.
We have also expanded our facility to help more senior and handicapped dogs and hope to be able to intake more in 2021.
