What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Senior cats (age 7 +) and cats with special needs (e.g., cancer, diabetes, kidney disease, cerebral hypoplasia, FIV, FIP, etc.) are significantly overlooked in our country's shelters and rescue organizations. In the "best" cases, these wonderful cats languish for years in non-kill shelters or rescues, never being adopted. In the worst cases, they are quickly euthanized in kill shelters. Either result is certainly not optimal. In a nut shell, these cats are viewed as unadoptable and a "burden" by our society at large. In large part, this is because of a significant lack of knowledge about common cat illnesses and conditions. To make matters worse, the cost to care for a senior cat with illnesses can be very expensive, causing financial hardship for pet owners, and contributing to the high number of senior and special needs cats surrendered to our country's shelters each year.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Doodle's Ranch and Sanctuary believes that every cat (regardless of age or physical condition) is worth fighting for and our mission is to reduce the number of special needs cats surrendered to shelters in our country.

Our strategy is twofold:
1. Serve as a knowledge center for owners of cats with special needs and illnesses.
It can be scary and confusing to hear a diagnosis that sounds so grim when explained by your vet...the costs and time needed can feel overwhelming. Doodle's Ranch and Sanctuary is a beacon of light in a sea of confusion and sadness for these pet owners. We can provide guidance and resources on how to care for cats with various special needs, which allows owners to feel more in control and confident of their ability to care for their beloved pet. This is the best case scenario as the pet stays at home where it is loved, and serves to reduce intakes to our shelters.

2. Serve as a forever home for those special needs cats that are out of options in high kill shelters.
We are a cat sanctuary and our cats with various terminal and non-terminal illnesses are able to live out their lives safe and loved, while getting the best veterinary care possible. We care for those abandoned and tossed away like trash and welcome them to the sanctuary for whatever time they may have left to live their lives.

3. Serve as a temporary foster when owners are dealing with a temporary personal or financial crisis.
As a cat sanctuary, we have the space and ability to care for cats with any illness and, when needed, we have temporarily cared for cats of owners dealing with personal issues that don't allow them to care for their cat fully. Our goal is to keep owner and cat together and we bridge the gap during difficult times.

Our founder has been volunteering in animal rescue for almost 2 decades and is very knowledgeable about many cat needs and illnesses, particularly diabetes. With her own personal knowledge and her contacts across the animal rescue world, she hasn't met a cat that she couldn't help. Additionally, we work with an amazing local vet partner and together we are able to develop appropriate strategies for each cat's health.

We also have a strong local volunteer base to help care for the cats at our sanctuary, including transporting them to and from vet and specialist appointments and helping with feedings. Our volunteers are a true blessing to us!

We love this question, because we are so proud of what we have accomplished so far and are thrilled at the possibilities ahead of us! There are currently a lot of changes happening at Doodle's as we increase our volunteer base and work to network even more with our donor base, our local community members and businesses, and our vet partner. We are looking to streamline our knowledge database on cat health and more formally educate cat owners on various illnesses, taking away the scariness of the unknown. We have increased our networking with various shelters and rescues in the US and have already been able to save 3 cats in the first 3 months of 2020. Even better things are yet to come for Doodle's Ranch and Sanctuary.
