Mission

Girls Inc. of Greater Los Angeles is a youth serving organization inspiring all girls to be strong, smart, and bold. Through a combination of supportive environments, mentoring relationships and research based, age appropriate curricula, girls in grades K-12 remain on an academic track, while acquiring the personal assets and life skills they need to lead healthy, educated, and independent lives.

While there have been strides in equality over the generations, girls still face gender and other inequities that greatly affect their ability for a successful life, including: 1 in 7 U.S. girls will not finish high school on time; 1 in 5 girls in the U.S. lives in poverty; 3 in 10 will become pregnant before the age of 20; and 1 in 4 young women experiences sexual assault before the age of 18. 100% of the girls we serve are considered at-risk, due to circumstance such as family poverty, gang surroundings and homelessness. Education levels of the students combined in the schools where we deliver programming average 21% proficiency in ELA (state average 49%) and 19% proficiency in Math (state average 38%). Graduation rates for the areas we serve are approximately 73.1% for Hispanic students and 61.9% for African American students (below LAUSD graduation rates (77% in 2016)). Further, the areas where our girls live are often unsafe to play in and food insecurity is a serious issue.

Girls Inc. Strong programming helps girls acquire the skills to make informed decisions, resist peer pressure, avoid risky behaviors and take charge of their health. Girls develop assertiveness and refusal skills to avoid substance use and educate peers and younger girls on these issues. They learn about their bodies and identify ways and reasons to avoid early pregnancy and prevent sexually transmitted infections. Girls learn media influences on self perception, embrace sportsmanship, positive risk taking, and team building, and build a holistic approach to stress management, nutrition, physical activity, and positive body image.

Girls Inc. Smart programming helps improve girls' performance in school, boost their literacy skills and participate in programming that helps them aspire to and plan for education beyond high school. Girls also develop an enthusiasm for and skills in STEM and explore nontraditional career options. Middle and high school girls begin to prepare for college, including course selection, campus visits and securing financial aid. Girls also explore job readiness through workshops and introductions to diverse women professionals in various careers.

Girls Inc. Bold programming helps girls gain the skills and confidence to avoid and address violence in their homes, relationships and communities. They develop their voices and learn to positively advocate for themselves and others. Girls also gain financial literacy skills to ensure they have the tools, knowledge and support to understand and manage money responsibly.

Girls Inc.'s mission has always stemmed from a fundamental belief in the inherent potential of every girl to be a confident, educated woman and contributing member of society. Our overarching goal is to help girls who are most at-risk remain on an academic track and graduate from high school, matriculate into post secondary education and have rewarding careers, while developing the personal assets and life skills they need to lead healthy, educated and independent lives.

Through research based, age appropriate learning and enrichment opportunities that bolsters their education, breaks traditional patterns, builds self-confidence, fosters leadership and teamwork, and helps them develop healthy living practices, participating girls develop the education, tools, and skills they need to change the trajectory of their lives and break the cycle of poverty they are growing up in.

We put our mission into practice through the Girls Inc. Experience, which consists of six essential elements:

• A pro-girl environment that is physically, socially, and emotionally safe.
• Trusting, mentoring relationships with trained facilitators and volunteers.
• Holistic, compensatory, and intentional programming focused on girls' specific developmental needs, while providing them with exposure to a wide variety of experiences and options they might not have otherwise.
• Relevant, field-tested, and research based academic curricula that is age-appropriate, hands-on, and ongoing.
• Motivating, deliberate, and interactive activities that develop and promote girls' self-esteem and strengths.
• Sustained exposure to programming and connection with a girl over time, to increase the positive impact outcomes and reduce the potential for negative ones.

Major areas of programming addresses: STEM education, economic and general literacy, pregnancy and drug abuse prevention, media literacy, leadership, adolescent health, and violence prevention.

GIGLA stands apart from other afterschool programs as the only area agency providing an ongoing, whole girl approach that addresses the unique developmental needs of girls, while helping them remain on an academic track. Many of the girls we serve will be the first in their families to anticipate graduating from high school, entering college and leading self assured, fulfilling and financially independent lives, as engaged members of their communities.

As a more than 150 year old national organization, Girls Inc.'s time tested curriculum is research based and impact driven to address the whole girl. Program outcomes are tracked and measured to ensure that our programming remains relevant to the needs of the girls we serve (low-income; girls of color) and to help inform program and staff development needs.

All programming is facilitated by trained Program Leaders and Volunteers who deliver the programs, interact with the girls on a daily basis, and build mentoring relationships. Program staff are college educated and have professional experience in Women’s and Gender Studies, Education, and Psychology. The staff also receives extensive training for their roles in delivering the Girls Inc. program.

To help further advance equity and inclusion we utilize additional program tools, such as a cultural considerations module to enhance our STEM based programming Operation SMART, which helps build girls interest in and enthusiasm for STEM subjects and encourages career development in fields where women, especially those of color are greatly underrepresented.

We are also a sub-contractor on a grant from The Juvenile Justice Prevention and Intervention Dept. called Bold Futures, which is a mentoring program for girls ages 9 to 14. Currently we have 55 girls and 16 mentors participating in this program.

GIGLA is aligned with the Girls Inc. National advocacy agenda, which drives policies and practices to open doors for women and helps to ensure equality for all those facing barriers and injustices. To solidify these commitments, Girls Inc. launched the Girls Inc. National Diversity and Inclusion Task Force, which GIGLA utilizes as a thought leader, advocate and resource in fostering the organization’s core values, particularly the value to appreciate, embrace, and advance diversity and inclusion.

GIGLA provides programming “free of charge” to socioeconomically disadvantaged girls in elementary, middle, and high schools in south Los Angeles. We collaborate with other Girls Inc. affiliates for joint program and enrichment activities, as well as joint funding opportunities where available. Since our establishment in 2016, GIGLA has cultivated over 35 community based partnerships to enhance our overall program impact through mentorship, educational enhancement and enrichment opportunities in Los Angeles County.

GIGLA was established in 2016, with a focus on helping at-risk girls in underserved areas of greater Los Angeles. In our short history, we have gone from serving 214 girls in the 2015/2016 school year, to providing 33,622 total service hours for over 1,000 girls by the end of 2018. We are working to increase our impact and expand our reach to serve more at-risk girls.

GIGLA's programs are a vital contribution to the girls and families we serve as the only area agency providing a comprehensive, whole girl developmental approach. Many of the girls we serve will anticipate being the first in their families to graduate from high school, matriculate into college and lead self assured, independent and successful lives.
