Mission

KANPE, which means “to stand up" in Creole, was founded by two Canadian women of Haitian origin, Dominique Anglade (Leader of the Quebec Liberal Party) and Régine Chassagne (founding member of the band Arcade Fire). In Haitian Creole, “kanpe” means to stand up. KANPE is a foundation that brings support to the underserved rural communities in Haiti their path to autonomy. KANPE is active in the Central Plateau region of Haiti, in the community of Baille Tourible. Our actions focus on the Haitian population, identifying and expressing their needs. We partner with Haitian organizations who's complementary expertise contributes to the knowledge, tools and training required for the families and their community to get on the path towards autonomy.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

KANPE - Core Program Pillars

KANPE, with its local Haitian partners including Zanmi Lasante (the Haitian branch of Partners-in-Health), supports the most vulnerable communities to achieve autonomy by strengthening six pillars: health and nutrition, food sovereignty and climate resilience, education, entrepreneurship, leadership, and local infrastructure.

KANPE is active in the Central Plateau region of Haiti, in a municipality called Thomonde, and more specifically in the rural community of Baille Tourible.

We guarantee access to free, quality healthcare and education for young people to break the cycle of poverty and improve health. We promote sustainable economic development by strengthening food security. We support the leadership development of women and young people, helping them to acquire the skills they need to become agents of change. We help women and young people to increase their incomes by creating jobs. Lastly, we help provide the facilities needed to support sustainable development initiatives.
