What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

According to the latest US Census, there are an estimated 194,451 members of the lesbian & gay* community aged 45 to 90+ living in the four largest counties of North Texas (Dallas, Tarrant, Collin, & Denton). Also according to the census, 27% of all people ages 65+ live alone. Many programs have been developed for non-LGBT aging citizens; however, access to these programs for LGBT citizens is a challenge because of continued discrimination and the inability or unwillingness of LGBT persons to live contrary to their orientation, that is, essentially to go back into the closet. This is who we target to serve.

Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Advocacy/Education, Housing and Health for Aging LGBT Cultural Competency & Equality

Our work is done through several approaches:
- Training North Texas 2-1-1 staff on LGBT cultural competency in handling calls and referrals related to the complex needs of the aging LGBT members of Texas
- Program to assess LGBT equality competency in senior living facilities, hospice providers and home health care practitioners, as provided through the North Texas LGBT-Friendly Senior Housing Guide
- Develop a vast network of collaboration partners with the Coalition to provide safe and effective services for the aging LGBT community,
- Working with Lambda Legal, Senior Source, AARP, Resource Center, Alzheimer's Association to advocate service availability, provide education/training for seniors, and support current and future legislation as it affects the equal treatment of the aging LGBT Community.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Our Mission
Improve and protect the quality of life of older LGBT adults in North Texas through coordination and collaboration for health, housing, advocacy, financial security, and social services.

Collaborate with area service agencies in North Texas who focus on services to aging residents and work bring those services to the LGBT Community -- through LGBT Cultural Competency training and assessments.

Second, we rely on research and academic surveys through regional Universities to accurately measure the unique needs of a person as they age and are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender.

Measure senior living communities, hospice providers and home health care practitioners in LGBT cultural competency of LGBT individuals and continue to update the North Texas LGBT-Friendly Senior Housing Guide.

Provide outlets to combat social isolation, advocate for equality and justice, and educate all.

Our Board consists of highly talented and committed individuals with proven track records in LGBT advocacy and support services creation and administration. These Board Members also have a stellar reputation in the LGBT activism world which encourage other members of the community to engage and expand the scope of talent and resources to addresses these needs.

This is our sixth year of operation FY 2021. The education, advocacy, and outreach the organization does this through providing training programs, sharing advocacy issues and opportunities and creating social engagement opportunities to reduce isolation. We are also focused on the update of our North Texas LGBT-Friendly Senior Housing Guide. It was recently revamped for easy, searchable, online accessibility.

One of the most important needs the organization is addressing services that simply does not exist today for the senior North Texas LGBT community; measuring adherence to established LGBT equality and competency needs, and identify training needs for LGBT competency in organizations serving the aging LGBT Community in Texas. This organization is examining LGBT senior living housing options and providing information resources to LGBT residents initially to the 4 largest counties in North Texas; Dallas, Tarrant, Collin, and Denton.

Data
  • We review compensation data across the organization (and by staff levels) to identify disparities by race.
  • We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
Policies and processes
  • We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
  • We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
  • We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
