What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Lift Brigade® supports children undergoing treatment for cancer and other life-threatening diagnoses with distraction tools, advocacy and support aimed at making this difficult time as positive as possible for all involved. Our programs align with hospital/clinic Child Life Services programs but are strongly influenced by our founder Lance White’s personal experience after being diagnosed with cancer in September of 2014.

Distraction Tools

Lift Brigade® supports children undergoing treatment for cancer and other life-threatening diagnoses with distraction tools, advocacy and support aimed at making this difficult time as positive as possible for all involved.

[from The Child Life Profession website] Infants, children and youth confront a wide variety of stressful and potentially traumatic events that can impact their ability to cope. These experiences related to healthcare can lead to feelings of fear, confusion, loss of control and isolation that can inhibit their development and have negative effects on their physical and emotional health and well-being.

Children and youth

"LiftBuddies” began to go to home with patients and siblings as soon as they arrived at Children’s Blood & Cancer Center (CBCC) at Dell Children’s! We attached the following note to each buddy:

"This LiftBuddy is a great listener, cuddler, and will stay by your side during tough times. Prayers and encouragement have been poured into this buddy’s wishing star. Just open the back to add a wish or prayer to the golden star. We hope this LiftBuddy gives you comfort, reminds you that you are not alone, & brings you joy.”

In support of the Children’s Blood and Cancer Center (CBCC) at Dell Children’s, Lift Brigade leads "wish list” drives that target needed items for the clinic.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Team with Child Life Services Programs in hospitals and clinics. Understand their needs and work to develop programs that support their mission to serve their patients. Our programs are focused on:

– Distraction Tools
– Awareness and Advocacy
– Patient/Family Support

Lance's story and his ability to relate to the kids and their experience provides us with partners who have like minded goal of helping kids going through tough medical treatments. We have developed some key partners that provide scale with in-kind donations:

- Electronic Arts
- Microsoft
- ACF
- Rooster Teeth

To date we have established assistance at:

– Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas
– Children’s Blood and Cancer Center @ DCMC
– Doctor’s Hospital @ Renaissance (Edinburg, TX)
– Vannie E. Cook Jr. Children’s Cancer & Hematology Clinic(McAllen, TX)

[Effort Example: Dell Children’s Medical Center – DCMC]

Lift Brigade has installed consoles in ALL 24 rooms on the 4North unit of DCMC. This unit primarily supports hematology and oncology patients but also cares for overflow patients. In addition to acquiring and installing the consoles and associated accessories, Lift Brigade worked with DCMC to allow the consoles to access the internet via a private network allowing for kids to access their online accounts while in the hospital. This has been a HUGE win for the kids. In addition, DVDs and Blu Rays can be played and streaming content accessed (e.g. Netflix, Prime Video, etc.) as the consoles perform as a entertainment center for each room.

Lift Brigade also supports this installation as well as two (2) playrooms on the floor ensuring that the consoles are always available for the kids.

Development of a community portal and content creation for kids and parents.
