Jane Austen Summer Program
Spreading Literacy & Building Community through Austen's Novels
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
In the United States, high schools are exposing students to less and less older literature. As a result, fewer students are reading older literature inside or outside of the classroom. Building on the popularity of the films of Jane Austen's novels, and her general name recognition, we aim to inspire younger generations to read more older literature, encourage general readers as well as scholars to learn about the culture and history of Georgian England, and provide middle and high school teachers with new means of interesting their students in older literature.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Building on the popularity of the films of Jane Austen's novels, and her general name recognition, we aim to inspire younger generations to read more older literature, encourage general readers as well as scholars to learn about the culture and history of Georgian England, and provide middle and high school teachers with new means of interesting their students in older literature. We create resources and events for all fans of Austen, from first-time readers to veteran scholars.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We run four separate programs, each with an independent website and a different target audience.
1. Jane Austen Summer Program (www.janeustensummer.org) is a 4-day in-person symposium with lively speakers, discussion groups, hands-on workshops, adaptation sessions, and a Regency ball.
2. JASP+ (www.jaspplus.org) is a 2-day add-on event for middle and high school teachers, who want to polish pedagogical skills for improving literacy (and specifically literacy in older literature) to their students. Teachers earn CEUs and create teaching tools. The website also hosts past programs, lectures, and free teaching tools.
3. Jane Austen & Co (janeaustenandco.org) is an online live video series that has been running since 2020. We feature scholars and authors with interviews and live questions from our audiences. Previous series have included "Race in the Regency" and "Everyday Science in Georgian England."
4. Jane Austen's Desk (janeaustensdesk.org) is an online interactive environment that we are developing with funds from the National Endowment for the Humanities. We hope to release the prototype in 2024.
