Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
The Student Free Speech Foundation has been created to contest this idea of censoring and limiting speech, because we believe that it does nothing but shelter students from the differences we encounter outside a college campus, instead of training us for them. We believe that limitations on speech stunt our intellectual growth and silence the voices of those in non-authoritative positions.
We are out to make a positive change in speech policies through conversations and debates involving the unheard student voice. This will be accomplished by creating platforms necessary for protests, debates, and even dissent, through proper policy change.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We have been expanding our network of institutions with Foundation representatives. Diversification of institutions has been our goal to continuing our growth (e.g. size, government affiliation, or national ranking). We have mainly been accomplishing this growth through our social media presence, which is growing and becoming more engaging every single day.
On top of the network of institutions with our representatives, we have been expanding our network of First Amendment experts, including Professor Geoff Stone of the University of Chicago, to expand the knowledge base of the greater Foundation.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
There are two main capabilities we have that are, and will continue to, help the Foundation succeed: passion and social media. As college students ourselves, we are the ones living with these limitations on speech. No person or organization out there will be able to match our drive for change—our passion. Furthermore, our leadership and volunteers have grown up with social media sites. Social media sites, like Facebook and Twitter, open an unquantifiable number of opportunities. Being an organization run by those who have grown up with this power is what has helped our mission reach over a million people to date, and tens of millions to come.
The Student Free Speech Foundation is the only national organization to possess the passion, social media skills, and talent necessary to make positive change—and we will.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Cases of censorship and limitations of been increasing at an unprecedented pace, as if there are no checks and balances in place for doing so. Our first step in combating this is by expanding our network of liaisons and chapters as much as possible to expand our institutional reach. One important aspect of this is by maintaining a large amount of diversity amongst the institutions we have a representative (e.g. public vs. private, large vs. small).
About 30% of the institutions where we have a liaison or chapter are public universities. We have also been improving our reach of the Ivy League schools, now having a liaisons at Yale and Harvard. The size of the schools we have liaisons at ranges from ~2,500 students to ~40,000 students. More importantly, however, we have representatives in 17 states, the District of Columbia, as well as in Canada.
As we are just rolling out our large projects, and still working on growth and expansion, we have not been able to make large strides into our projects. We are working with limited resources, though have large growth plans and expectations, so our execution will be slower than a much larger organization. With that said, we feel as though we are in the perfect position going forward, and we know that will show through with the execution of our projects.
