WINDHAVEN THERAPEUTIC RIDING

Mission

Wind Haven Therapeutic Riding (WHTR) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization devoted to providing a fun and safe environment for all service members and veterans who struggle with physical and invisible wounds of war. Our mission is to utilize the mutually beneficial human-equine relationship to promote healing of active duty, reserves and Veterans suffering from the effects of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and other service related injuries. Veterans progress from non-riding sessions to riding as they are ready. Lessons are individualized and progressive. All clients start with Session 1 and may repeat any Session as many times as they find beneficial.

What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Many Veterans suffer from PTSD and TBI which limits their ability to have meaningful relationships, function effectively in society, be emotionally stable and happy and hold a job. The suicide rate among Veterans nationwide is 20 per day. The WHTR equine therapy program has resulted in less anxiety and depression, improved relationships, less fatigue and more energy in the participating Veterans. For those who remain in the program for 12 or more weeks, these improvements begin to persist between lessons. Families report less anger, less use of medications and alcohol and improved relationships.

War Horses with Warriors

Windhaven Therapeutic Riding (WHTR) offers a variety of horsemanship courses for all Veterans and Active-Duty service members. WHTR aims to improve physical and emotional well-being through a connection with a horse. Our instructors have a variety of backgrounds and certification: trauma based care, CHA and Natural Lifemanship. All of our volunteers are trained by the WHTR instructors and our PhD educator and are pursuing training in Natural Lifemanship. The Veteran can advance through the levels or choose to stay at any level as long as desired.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Windhaven Therapeutic Riding (WHTR) is devoted to providing a fun and safe environment for all service members and Veterans who struggle with physical and invisible wounds of war to benefit from the connection between the horse and human. Because the brain of the horse is similar to the human brain that has experienced trauma, the process of developing a trusting relationship with a horse helps develop new and better interactions among the parts of the human brain. Windhaven Therapeutic Riding is based on the approaches formalized by Natural LIfemanship and the developing science of trauma recovery. Our goals are that Veterans will have fewer or less severe symptoms of PTSD and TBI, will be happier and able to relate better with others, may be able to return to work or may progress to being a volunteer at WHTR to help other Veterans.

Windhaven Therapeutic Riding focuses on the relationship with the horse in a manner that is individualized for the Veteran and as progressive as that Veteran wants to be. All Veterans start with at least 8-16 lessons on the ground focusing on developing a connection of trust with the horse. Lessons are offered once weekly for approximately 40 weeks per year. When the connection with the horse is secure on the ground and it is safe to proceed to riding, the Veteran can progress to Rhythmic Riding in an arena, riding in an enclosed obstacle course and eventually trail riding if that is what they wish to do. Other options include continuing to work with horses on the ground without a lead rope (liberty), playing with different horses, or becoming a volunteer.

Windaven Therapeutic Riding is a 100% volunteer run organization in order to assure that no Veteran need ever pay for these equine therapy lessons. At the present time, we are only able to offer lessons on Saturdays. We offer 3 sessions of lessons with 6 Veterans in each lesson.

Out 2020 data indicates that anxiety, feelings of detachment, irritability and fatigue declined pre-post and that energy increased pre-post. The effects on pain were variable. For some of the Veterans pain increased with riding and for most pain was not a significant issue. For those Veterans who continued with the program for more than 16 weeks, these improvements persisted between lessons. A chart displaying these outcomes is included in Additional Docs.
