Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Neurodegenerative Disease Research

Since 2019, LLF has sought to leverage LLNL’s computing,
bioengineering, and biosciences core competencies to
accelerate collective efforts to diagnose, understand,
and treat neurodegenerative diseases like Amyotrophic
Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), Alzheimer’s, Multiple Sclerosis, and
Parkinson’s. With support from partners like the ALS CURE
Project and our generous donor community, we’ve seeded
nearly $1-million in early-stage research projects focused
on biomarker identification, disease mechanisms, genetic
influences, and therapeutic interventions.

LLF’s early investments in ALS-related projects have yielded
important insights into the many neurological diseases
affecting a growing portion of our aging population.

Population(s) Served
Adults

LLF works to leverage LLNL’s capabilities and expertise to address climate resilience solutions. LLF funded a groundbreaking LLNL study, Getting to Neutral, that identified a robust suite of technologies to help California become carbon neutral – and ultimately carbon negative – by 2045. To ensure a timely and and responsible approach to the state of California's carbon capture and storage opportunities, LLF funded a comprehensive follow-on report, Permitting Carbon Capture and Storage Projects in California, to help understand the current regulatory environment and recommend efficiencies. In Fall 2021, LLF and LLNL launched the Carbon Cleanup Initiative (CCI). This science toolkit features a website and targeted classroom lessons designed to serve as a relevant, public resource on climate resilience, carbon neutrality and mitigation.

Population(s) Served
Adults

Since our inception, LLF has worked closely with
our colleagues at Lawrence Livermore National Lab
to support unique educational and professional
STEM experiences for high school through
postdoctoral students. With a special focus on
students historically excluded from many STEM
disciplines, LLF connects young people with the
Lab’s world-class innovation, technology, and
research capabilities through meaningful hands on learning experiences and fellowships. Working
closely with nationally recognized Lab mentors
on research projects with real-world applications,
our students gain exposure to opportunities that
position them for continued learning and success in
their chosen STEM fields.

Population(s) Served
Adolescents
Young adults

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

The Livermore Lab Foundation fuels scientific discovery and technological innovation through its philanthropic partnership with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL).

LLFs key program focus areas include:
Advancing the Understanding of Neurodegenerative Disease
Accelerating Climate Resilience and Carbon Removal
Igniting Innovation in Fusion Energy Research
Inspiring the Next Generation of Science and Technology Leaders
research.

In essence, the Livermore Lab Foundation serves as a vital bridge, connecting LLNL's groundbreaking science with the communities it impacts, and paving the way for a brighter, more innovative future.

The Livermore Lab Foundation deploys multiple strategies to achieve its ambitious goals of bolstering scientific research and inspiring future STEM leaders. Some of those strategies include the following:

1. Cultivating partnerships: Partnering with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), as well as universities, corporations, and other non-profits amplifies our reach and impact. LLF actively seeks and nurtures collaborations that help support LLNL's research and educational initiatives.
2. Engaging Donors: Building strong relationships with individual and organizational donors ensures financial stability and allows LLF to fund essential programs.
3. Investing in the Future: Funding fellowships and research stipends for diverse students at various levels attracts top talent to pursue careers in STEM fields relevant to LLF's focus areas. Pairing experienced scientists with aspiring researchers fosters knowledge transfer and career guidance, building a robust future workforce.

By using these strategies, LLF plays a crucial role in amplifying the impact of LLNL's scientific endeavors, cultivating the next generation of scientific leaders, and building a more informed and engaged society that values the power of science for a better future.
