Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

The purpose of Cocoa Packs is to ensure that all children in the Hershey area and surrounding communities are food secure every day of the year. School based programs are able to provide nutritious meals during the school day, however this leaves a gap on the weekends, over the holidays and in the summer. The remaining 185 days of the year, those children facing food insecurity are truly vulnerable in their access to food. The aim of Cocoa Packs is to fill this gap, providing packs to children, filled with love and a variety of nutritious breakfast, lunch and dinner items. Or the option to use an on sight choice pantry. Cocoa Packs is a non-profit 501 c.
Today Hershey Middle School serves at the heart of the organization. It is the distribution center for all food collected, organized and distributed on the premises and to ancillary sites .
What started as a weekend food assistance program now also offers on-sight educational opportunities on relevant topics and other support to participants.

Site Expansion and Improvement
Additional space donated by Hershey Middle School as well as double metal doors at the entrance of Cocoa Packs has given the “distribution center” a private wing. Within this wing the following improvements have been made:
A larger Choice Pantry is under construction, allowing for additional students to choose well rounded meal items, with guidance.
Provision of additional storage, which allows for extra purchasing when pricing deals occur
A designated Recipient room has allowed Cocoa Packs to provide additional educational offerings on distribution days. Penn State nurses have been a part of those education tutorials, offering information on topics such as playground safety, fire prevention, Halloween safety as well as the provision of a flu vaccine clinic.
A designated volunteer space has facilitated the ability for Vista School and Special Education partners in Derry Twp. to continue to join volunteers at Cocoa Packs, on a weekly basis.

There are currently hundreds of volunteers supporting the operations of Cocoa Packs
The Vista School brings students weekly to volunteer
Special Education students from Hershey Elementary , Middle & High School Volunteer weekly
Many community groups volunteer in the operations of Cocoa Packs. Some examples of that are:
Students from Hershey High School helped assemble boxes for the Toys for Tots drive
Over 10 Girl Scout Troops volunteered at Cocoa Packs Command Center to help sort and prepare fresh produce for distribution
The Hershey Rotary assemble packs monthly
The Goddard School does yearly food drives.
Partnerships with over 25 community groups have been developed. The following represent a snapshot
Trend Vending has supported Cocoa Packs through its food donation monthly since distribution began
Due to the success last Christmas of the Toys for Tots via Cocoa Packs, Toys for Tots named Cocoa Packs the official distribution center for Derry Township.

Over 14,000 packs have been distributed since 2015.
Over 100 students have been able to exit out of the program due to the attainment of food security.
Through the donation of a van by Faulkner Subaru, delivery expansion has been made possible. This allows the distribution center to pack food and deliver to ancillary locations. This facilitates the delivery of food to those experiencing medical conditions or transportation issues. This also allows for pick up of food donations and purchases.
Through Derry Township Middle School Student School lunch program unopened and unused lunch items such as milk , carrots, apples , fresh fruits that were otherwise thrown out are donated to Cocoa Packs. If Cocoa Packs has anything left over they expand the reach by delivering them to the Ronald McDonald House , Hershey Food Bank , Bethesda Mission etc.
Derry Township Mom's Group provided Hams &Turkeys for Easter for all recipients.
