What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Foster Parent Education

Foster Parent Trainings - Foster Source provides various free training seminars for continuing education and provides appropriate childcare. Topics of training seminars include basics of parenting children with trauma, repercussions of fetal alcohol syndrome and drug exposure, as well as trainings on parenting children of a different race, choosing the right therapy type for your foster child, and in-depth sessions regarding different therapy options.

Foster Parent Support Groups – Foster parents have the opportunity to come together and discuss their struggles, and supporting one another during this time. The private location provides a safe, judgement-free environment for foster parents to vent, ask advice, laugh and cry.

Our behavioral health training courses are currently offered in Windsor, Brighton, Aurora, and Denver. We serve foster parents statewide in Colorado, and have made individual trips to try to better accommodate rural foster parents. The Learning Source is our virtual classroom and formed as a result of so many rural counties asking how their foster parents can access our trainings. This virtual classroom will increase access to behavioral health education to foster parents all over the state, and eventually, even nationally. We are thrilled to be able to include foster parents live in the virtual classroom during our live in person trainings as well as afterwards in an on demand capacity.

Our top 4 items that we provide are weighted items, car seats, mattresses and bunk beds. Recent wishes include box braids for a teen in care wishing for a new hair style, an egress window for a family who wanted to take siblings, and a hotel stay for a family with a new teen placement.

Data
  • We review compensation data across the organization (and by staff levels) to identify disparities by race.
  • We ask team members to identify racial disparities in their programs and / or portfolios.
  • We analyze disaggregated data and root causes of race disparities that impact the organization's programs, portfolios, and the populations served.
  • We disaggregate data to adjust programming goals to keep pace with changing needs of the communities we support.
  • We employ non-traditional ways of gathering feedback on programs and trainings, which may include interviews, roundtables, and external reviews with/by community stakeholders.
  • We disaggregate data by demographics, including race, in every policy and program measured.
Policies and processes
  • We have a promotion process that anticipates and mitigates implicit and explicit biases about people of color serving in leadership positions.
  • We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
  • We have community representation at the board level, either on the board itself or through a community advisory board.
  • We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
  • We measure and then disaggregate job satisfaction and retention data by race, function, level, and/or team.
  • We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
