What we aim to solve
Health centers around the world are lacking vital equipment to provide the full range of diagnostic and treatment services to meet the health needs of rural populations. Simultaneously, medical device manufactures have a surplus of functional equipment that they are unable to sell, producing medical waste.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Savanna-la-Mar General Hospital - Jamaica
Ultrasound and colposcopy screening for Westmoreland Parish. As of 2019 the hospital is conducting an average of 2000 deliveries/year, with 105 OBGYN and 19 non OB ultrasounds conducted in 2019 alone. The Hospital is now assisting 20 external healthcare centres, assisting women planning to have home births with prenatal screening on the Ultrasound donated by HERHealthEQ.
Cervical cancer management - Northern Tanzania
Provision of cryotherapy to rural health centers as part of "see-and-treat" management of cervical cancer. HERHealthEQ has partnered with MedGyn Products Inc in the donation of cyroablation equipment as well as Tanzanian company, SkyConnect, which developed a cervical cancer screening platform, SEVIA, that leverages mobile health for real-time cervical cancer screening. Local physicians are using VIA+ screening and visual inspection via the android app, with the 1st screening images sent to a remote oncologist. The oncologist then provides a second opinion and evaluation, giving feedback whether to proceed with biopsy. This initiative is also helping to develop the skills of local physicians in the more remote areas of Tanzania.
As of February 2020, the devices donated have resulted in the screening of 1798 women, resulting in 38 biopsies and 52 treatments.
Breast Cancer - Costa Rica
The inspiration for HERHealthEQ dates back to this first “unofficial” project in Costa Rica.
From 2009 to 2011, the number of mammograms performed at Hospital Tony Facio Castro in Limón, Costa Rica declined sharply, from 2,600 to just 685 annually. This decline in women screened for breast cancer was attributed to old machinery frequently going out of service.
In October of 2013, HERHealthEQ Founder, Marissa Fayer, teamed up with Hologic and Fundacion Anna Ross to donate a mammography machine to the hospital.
In the years that followed, the number of women who died from breast cancer decreased significantly, from 19 in 2013 to 12 in 2015.
This decline has occurred even as the number of women diagnosed with tumors has risen. This important outcome is testament to the need for high-functioning screening equipment and a commitment to regularly screening at-risk women.
To date, more than 14,000 women have been screened with the equipment donated by HERHealthEQ.
The latest metrics from this project show a 400% increase in mammograms performed in the Limón region of Costa Rica. That is over 3,000 screenings annually!
Cervical Cancer - Vietnam
This program, formed under the strategic alliance of CureCervicalCancer (CCC) and HERHealthEQ, delivered 3 thermoablation devices to the Hue province of rural Vietnam in August 2019. These devices will assist in the prevention and treatment of early stage cervical cancer.
The 3 thermal ablation devices were donated to 3 different clinics: the ICRC Karin Higa Clinic, the VAM Fishman Family Clinic, and the Nam Dang Cervical Cancer Prevention Clinic. During the first week of the devices’ use, each of the clinics was staffed with 3 or 4 trainees and an expert facilitator who worked efficiently to screen more than 200 women daily.
As of March 2020, a total of 2366 women have been screened. 10 were VIA+ patients that were treated with the thermal ablation devices donated by HERHealthEQ!
In total, the trainees screened 877 women during the first week, using visual inspection with acetic acid. These women include Hue locals, teachers, and police officers. On the third day of training, a CCC record was broken when the trainees screened 321 women in one day!
HERHealthEQ’s partnership with CCC provides long-term opportunity to reach more women in geographically diverse regions around the world.
Breast Cancer - India
HERHealthEQ is launching a breast cancer screening program that will enable women to learn the basic techniques of doing a breast self-exam through a mobile phone app. This will then connect them to follow up care with a clinical breast exam and screening technology.
Using the Hum-Nari WayuHealth app, women around India will have the knowledge to perform self breast exams. HERHealthEQ will deploy at least 30 portable units that can change location depending on need. This will begin in the suburbs of Delhi and expand in Northern India and then other areas per the Jhpiego network of community health workers and operational partners. Each unit will be able to screen over 2000 women per year, so the impact is over 100,000 women will benefit in less than 2 years.
The program will train and equip local providers for breast cancer screening using our network of medical device companies to offer equipment at reduced cost, creating a complete care network that can be scaled across India. This will ensure that more women have a chance of early breast cancer detection and successful treatment outcomes through increasing awareness and access to affordable professional breast cancer screening.
Maternal Health - USA
HERHealthEQ donated to Plan A Health in Mississippi, a fetal monitor that will ensure both mother and baby have access to the critical care they need. This equipment is essential to the health of pregnant women living in rural Mississippi - where extreme poverty and lack of medical services are astounding.
HERHealthEQ Mexico
Deployment of equipment in a mobile health caravan in 3 phases, the Region Valles/Tequila, the Coastal area and finally the Metropolitan area. The goal is to treat over 100,000 people within 18-24 months, providing a 360 degree patient journey, ensuring continuity of care. The program will target areas of obesity and malnutrition, diabetes, hypertension, maternal health and cancers affecting women.
Burkina Faso - Cervical Cancer
HERHealthEQ is working in Burkina Faso in partnership with Jhpiego and the Kimi Foundation (Fundacion Kimi). The program will focus on the detection of cervical cancer, using Colposcope equipment donated by MedGyn. Located at a teaching hospital in the capital, the equipment was shipped to Burkina Faso in March of 2021, but has since been delayed for 1 year due to the pandemic.
The colposcope will be placed at the disposal of the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics of the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire (CHU, University Hospital Center) of Bogodogo in Ouagadougou, where it will be used to support the diagnosis of various pathologies, including the examination of precancerous cervical lesions. The population of the Bogodogo is estimated at 894,987 inhabitants in 2019, with 243,376 women of childbearing age representing the target population that could potentially benefit from this colposcopy equipment. According to statistics collected from the cervical cancer prevention unit of CHU Bogodogo, an average of about 2,000 women are screened per year for precancerous cervical lesions. It can then be estimated that the colposcopy device will be able to benefit a similar number each year over the next few years. The colposcope will improve the detection of precancerous lesions which will optimize timely treatment for women.
10-for-10
In 2022, HERhealthEQ and Lutech Medical started deploying 100 Lutech LT-300 colposcopes to local community-based healthcare clinics within 10 countries (including Costa Rica, Egypt, Fiji, Ghana, Lebanon, Mexico, Romania, South Africa, Zambia, and more). This project will screen 500,000 women for cervical cancer in just two years. When fully deployed, the program will have an impact of more than 450,000 women each year.
HERhealthEQ and Lutech are aiming to raise over $500,000 to implement this life-saving project.
In November of 2022, HERhealthEQ and Lutech travelled to Costa Rica to launch the first leg of the 10-for-10 project. Through generous donations from 2 Costa Rica based companies- Hologic Inc and The Coyol Free Trade Zone, alongside our individual fundraising efforts - full funding was secured for the entire deployment in the country, making it possible for all 10 devices to be home amongst the Caja network.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
HERHealthEQ matches high quality equipment with rural health facilities in need to address issues in women's health, in particular cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and maternal conditions.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We develop relationships with equipment manufacturers and health facilities to create a wide network of partners.
