What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Education past the secondary level in Haiti is not a normal path for students. The Kolej Project makes this available to qualified students through scholarships and mentoring programs. To prepare students for this step, the Kolej Project also operates an English language program and an Art program at a school local to Port Au Prince, Haiti.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

College Scholarships

The College Project (Kolej Project) offers full tuition scholarships to qualified students to attend college in the major of their choosing. The program was started because education is not a reality for most young people in Haiti. In fact, most young people in Haiti still do not complete high school. For those that do, most have no chance of going on to college.

We have 3 goals we use to measure program success:

Guide successful high school graduates in making a college and program decision, one that fits the aptitude and interest of the student as well as providing the potential for employment after completion.
Provide the student with an in country mentor, to help them navigate the transition to college and to guide them through challenges, disappointments, obstacles etc and ensure the student remains focused. The mentor reviews colleges and programs, which helps us in making a wise decision in were our resources will be spent. The mentor, our administrator of programs in Haiti, pays the college directly for tuition, ensuring the funds are utilized only for the intended purpose.
Invest in the growth and development of the student, to provide encouragement and advice to develop their ability to plan and make wise decisions, and ultimately to prepare them to become a mentor to another scholarship student in the future.

Art Program (Drawing and Charcoal Sketching)

The goal of the Art Program is to provide children a creative outlet and a break from the difficulties in daily life in Haiti. The Art Program is open to all neighborhood children every Saturday and is free of charge. It may seem that art is the last thing we should be doing in Haiti, but we think helping kids develop an imagination supports our mission and vision perfectly. By developing an imagination, these kids can see the future differently; they can see possibilities

Mentoring is an important part of our Vision. The purpose of this program is to develop leadership skills as well as provide guidance and accountability. By providing a college student the opportunity to be a mentor, leadership skills are developed. The mentor also learns to invest and take an interest in helping someone else succeed. They also share valuable knowledge and experience with another student.

For the new college student, being partnered with a mentor means they don;t have to navigate the process alone, they have someone to show them the way. They also have evidence that hard work and discipline pays off, this is a great encouragement when things get hard .

Young adults

The primary motivator for our programs is Inspiring Hope in a manner that supports our mission and vision:

Our Mission: Support education to impact economic future
Our Vision: Education delivers economic hope to the people we serve

Much of the hopelessness in Haiti stems from lack of job opportunities. As part of our program development we discovered how many of our initiatives provided a natural opportunity for creating jobs. In 2018, job skills and experience became an additional measurement for our program success.

Initially, we were able to provide two job opportunities: Program Administrator (college scholarships) and English Instructor (English Language Program). We have now added an Art Instructor and an English Language assistant; taking the number of employment opportunities associated with our programs to four.

The College Project is very proud of this accomplishment and even more proud of the effort and hard work being done in support of our mission and vision. We plan to continue to create job opportunities as part of the education programs we support.

We are excited to partner with a special needs school and residence in the coming year. In 2018, we were able to participate with the kids by bringing basketballs and having basketball camp with them in June and again in September. We were also able to provide humanitarian aid in the form of much needed clothing and shoes along with food. We can't wait to work out the details with the school administrator and look forward to Inspiring Hope at ASHCA!
