What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Many of our Veterans suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) . A study conducted by the VA revealed that on average, 22 Veterans commit suice daily. We want to prevent any more tragedies from happening. While suicide is the ultimate price to pay, those numbers do not show the number of Veterans suffering from PTSD and abusing drugs/alcohol, battle depression, and many other conditions. We would also like to provide light on Emergency Responders, who put their lives on the line each day protecting us. They are just as suseptible to being effected by PTSD as our Veterans. First Responders deal with the worst of peoples lives, at their all time low, on a daily basis. Another unfortunate result of these professions is physical injuries and illness. Our Heroes who succumb to this have sacrificed something many of us take for granted. The Men and Women who are permanently disabled or terminally ill, as a result of there service to our country and communities deserve attention!

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Hooks For Heroes wishes to create a positive outlet for our nation's Veterans & First Responders, to help them cope with the physical and mental injuries sustained during their service. We hope to empower them to live the quality of life that they deserve through fishing. This will allow our heroes to bond with others and enjoy all that nature has to offer on the water. Although we focus primarily on fishing trips, we also wish to provide awareness on this issue. We strive to help men and women in our military and emergency response system cope with the hardships, stress, injuries and illnesses associated with these professions. Fishing can act as an alternate method of treatment for them, and be the positive outlet they need. Fishing with a group of other heroes who they can relate to, can be tremendously helpful in healing our Veterans and First responders who are diagnosed with PTSD. As well as lift the spirit and morale of those with permanent disabilities and illness. It can potentially be more helpful than the traditional “doctors visit" by letting our heroes enjoy being on the water. If we can keep someone from going down the wrong path, and prevent a potential tragedy, then our mission is a success!

We are Veteran and First Responder ran, as well as avid fishermen. We want to share this with other men and women in these occupations and show them the therapeutic value fishing can have on one's mind. By contacting members of the fishing community, we are able to send our heroes out fishing in small and/or large groups. Whether they love fishing already or never tried it, we can steer a hero in the right direction to give them the best opportunity to enjoy themselves. We verify a persons credentials and then contact a charter captain local to their residence. We strive to make the whole process as stress free for the hero as possible. We take care of the entire booking process, as well as food/water/soda/transportation to and from the dock when applicable.

Our deep knowledge for the ocean and sport of fishing allows us to share this with Veterans & First Responders. We are capable of organizing trips of up to 80 people to fish comfortably for the day. These trips include full amenities to make sure every enjoys their experience. We can also send heroes in small groups fishing in their local waters. To fund these outings we hold fundraising events throughout the year as well as sell merchandise online to raise revenue. Our nonprofit is 100% volunteer and any and all proceeds go directly to funding these fishing trips, and/or go towards awareness for the cause. Hooks For Heroes is also an official vendor for the US Dept of Veterans Affairs and we are capable of organizing trips specifically for the VA to reach a broader range of veterans who can benefit from our services.

We have accomplished many things since our beginning, starting with becoming incorporated in NY State as a nonprofit, gaining 501(c)3 status through the IRS, becoming an official vendor of the Dept of Veterans Affairs and establishing ourselves as a reputable charity. We have a strong presence in our local communities by holding successful fundraising events, including an annual fishing tournament, to raise funding and awareness of our cause. Our reputation is most importantly backed by the many fishing trips across the country that we have sent our Veterans & First Responders on. The feedback is always positive and the emotions that our heroes express in regards to our trips are priceless. We have accomplished a lot in the time we have been established, and with the support of others we can continue to grow and serve our nations heroes!
