Innovation through research
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Currently it is difficult to obtain research funding specifically for sport horses and sport horse medicine. Until now, equine athletes and the sport horse industry have been underserved by research. SHRF seeks to change this by facilitating the knowledge and advancements research has again and again proven to yield.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Grants
The Sport Horse Research Foundation awards grants to researchers and/or organizations to perform excellent and significant research for the advancement of sport horses. The goal of our research is to facilitate a greater understanding of the risk factors, initiation and development of injury and disease, welfare and safety concerns, treatment and rehabilitation in order to improve the health and safety of equine athletes. Grants are strictly awarded only those researchers and organizations operating at the highest standards for the care and use of horses. The Board of Directors carefully evaluates the merit of each grant request and the quality of each applicant before any grant may be funded.
The Sport Horse Research Foundation shall make all research or grantee research available to the public by publishing our findings in academic journals and other media outlets.

What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
FUND TARGETED, MEANINGFUL RESEARCH
SHRF will initially focus on funding research targeting showjumping and dressage horses. In the future, we envision funding meaningful research for the benefit of each sport horse discipline.
ENHANCE INJURY PREVENTION
Much needed research will facilitate more accurate and earlier diagnoses, more effective treatment, and directed rehabilitation of equine injuries to increase career longevity and better inform industry stakeholders. We hope this will lead to a better understanding of sport horse injury risk and risk management.
REVOLUTIONIZE OPTIMAL HEALTH & PERFORMANCE
SHRF has the potential to change the way we interact with sport horses – from management, training, showing, diagnoses, and treatment to rehabilitation of equine athletes. Similarly to how the evolution of human medicine has embraced a holistic view of achieving optimal health and performance, the research we fund has unlimited potential to revolutionize the sport horse industry.
