Refuge Recovery

What we aim to solve
Refuge Recovery's mission is to help people lead lives free from the effects of addiction. Refuge Recovery was designed to be a viable, secular approach to recovery. It offers individuals actively engaged in recovery a safe and welcoming home to address their addictive thoughts and behaviors through non-theistic spiritual guidance and a supportive community. Refuge Recovery doesn’t ask anyone to shift a belief system, or for that matter to believe in anything at all. Adherence to Buddhism is not a requirement of participation. The founders of Refuge Recovery were inspired by the knowledge that while the theistic spiritual approach in AA and other 12-step programs helps many in their personal recovery, a significant number find it be a hindrance. These people need an alternative path. As evidenced through its exponential growth since the book Refuge Recovery was published in 2014, Refuge Recovery's treatment and support approach is addressing a profound need.

What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
The non-profit Refuge Recovery actively supports peer-led and locally governed Refuge Recovery Meetings, development and management of literature, maintaining a social media presence, ensuring appropriate and necessary reports and filings with government and other organizations, and serves as liaison with other groups and organizations pertinent to Refuge's mission. The non-profit Refuge Recovery also provides support to a network of Regional Representatives elected by each Refuge Recovery Region, maintains a committee to liaise with the Representatives, and adopts policy and engage in activities designed to support the work of the Representatives.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
1) Board governance and leadership: Refuge Recovery has a diverse and knowledgeable Board from the US and Canada. The majority of the membership has a direct affiliation with their local Refuge community and bring strategic and financial skills to the organization. 2) Financial management: The Chair and Executive Director both have advanced business experience and education. 3) Fundraising: Refuge relies on its local groups as well as social media outreach and programs such as Network for Good, Donate Well and Amazon Smiles for funding. 4) Program delivery and impact: Through outreach, technical support and a robust website, Refuge Recovery supports its global network of local groups. 5) Human resources: Refuge has a single part-time employee and a network of volunteers. 6) Networking and strategic partnerships: Refuge Recovery works closely with Treatment Centers who are interested in offering an alternative to 12 Step programs.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?

The Board of Directors is composed of ten members who bring a diversity of experience to their oversight responsibilities.
