Wayzata Conservancy (Lake Effect Conservancy)
Restore, protect and enhance a treasured asset for our community & broader region: Wayzata’s lakefront
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Shared experiences bring people closer together. For generations, the Wayzata lakefront has brought people together from across the state, providing a cherished experience unlike any other in MInnesota. Panoway on Wayzata Bay is a public-private partnership supported by the Wayzata Conservancy working to better connect residents to each other and to the city’s greatest asset, Lake Minnetonka.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Lake Exploration Camps
The Lake Exploration Camps are offered in partnership with Ridgedale YMCA along with the Wayzata Community Sailing Center, Wayzata School District, Science Museum of MN, University of MN, DNR, Three Rivers Park District, Minnehaha Creek Watershed District, Interfaith Outreach, Lake Minnetonka Association, Wayzata Parks & Trails, and the Wayzata Lake Effect Conservancy. This group collectively is known as the Lake Minnetonka Science Collaborative who share a goal of delivering a unique camp with experiential STEM learning and fun engagement with Lake Minnetonka. The result is multiple week long camps of STEM curriculum, with the lake serving as the classroom and campers enjoying fishing, sailing and adventures on the lake, along with all the other exciting activities of summer camp.
History Educational Programming
In recent years, the City of Wayzata and community have further strengthened their commitment to preserving railroad history by documenting and stabilizing the Section Foreman House. The City is pursuing additional formal recognition of the house’s historic significance by nominating the building to the National Register of Historic Places.
Educational programming topic areas include...
• Early 20th century railroad operations (construction and maintenance of railroad track and infrastructure, responsibilities of section foremen and section crews, life as a railroad employee, etc.)
• The history of the railroad in Minnesota and the Great Northern Railway (the construction of the first operating railroad in the state, development of the Great Northern Railway’s transcontinental railroad, etc.)
• The history of Wayzata (influence of the railroad on the geographic, physical, economic, and social development of Wayzata)

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Improving the lakeside ecosystem by reintroducing native plant life, restoring habitats and converting nearly one acre of concrete along Lake Street to park land will have direct impact on the environment
Providing greater public access to Lake Minnetonka and creating a living classroom by adding a lakeside boardwalk, making downtown
Wayzata more pedestrian and bike friendly, and renovating the Section Foreman House and park area to provide hands-on learning opportunities on the lakefront around the environment and history.
Preserving Wayzata’s history by making the Wayzata Depot more accessible and inviting by adding a restroom, an expanded garden and green space leading to the water including ADA access to the lake.
Promoting art and urban greenspace by inviting artists to design creative green spaces where residents can gather, reflect and recharge. In 2021 we plan on the installation of our first memorial designed by Civitas and James Dayton design commemorating the 20th anniversary of the tragic events of 9.11.
Keeping downtown commerce vibrant by attracting residents and guests to visit Wayzata’s premier shops, restaurants, cafes, and gathering spots.
