What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

The threat to movie paper cannot be understated. The international cultural history recorded in the words and images of movie paper is disappearing.

Collectors, archivists, and hobbyists acknowledge that time takes it toll. Paper disintegrates as it ages. Sunlight, fire and water are lethal enemies. Another danger is the destruction of movie paper by people who are unaware of its significance.

An historic marker was placed at the site of Vitascope Hall which opened on July 26, 1896 on Canal Blvd. in New Orleans, Louisiana. It was the world’s first permanent for-profit movie theatre, according to the Guinness Book of World Records. Efforts to mark the site began in 1913.

Goals & Strategy

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

We are collecting, preserving and researching movie posters and paper. Our archivists have previously published more than 22 reference books on the studio markings, poster artists, and authentication of movie posters and stills. With the support of MPA, they can conduct further research that was previously impossible.

Our strategies are four-fold:

Find and Identify: Locate and protect movie posters and paper accessories in danger of being damaged or destroyed.

Research and Development:  Promote innovation in the preservation of artifacts and ephemera.

Education: Provide guidance and training for archivists, museums, collectors, libraries, and film societies in the archiving and preservation of film artifacts and ephemera.

Digital Record: Make digital records to preserve images of artifacts and ephemera.

Through relationships with collectors, dealers, auction houses, and historic societies, we have already amassed an inventory of over 400,000 items.

Our outreach is expanding to Hollywood studios, guilds and academies.

Our archivists are recognized internationally as the leading authorities on identification, authentication, and preservation of movie posters and stills.

We have amassed an inventory of over 750,000 items.
We have processed about 20% of the inventory.
We have added 25,000 film titles to the Permanent Collection.
We have facilitated the installation of an historic marker at the site of Vitascope Hall, the first seated movie theater in the United States.
