Teaching People to Feed Themselves

Trenton, MO   |  https://seedsolution.org/

Mission

We are a small non-profit team of volunteers helping to feed people around the world in about a dozen countries. We began as a 4-H project in 2013 that has grown into a nonprofit. Our mission is to provide seeds and teach farming, to help people to feed themselves. Although we are small, we have helped increase the food security of over 10,000 people globally. We are now beyond our resources, because the need has become so great and people are literally starving to death.

What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

We are working to solve world hunger by providing seeds and instruction so people can raise their own food. This work also supports orphanages and girls' schools in Africa that are using these seeds as part of their mission.

Iremito School, Kenya

Luka Sunte is a elementary pre-school teacher in Iremito school in Amboseli part of Kenya. He is recognized locally as an “ambassador” of Maasai people and culture, and has represented Maasai interests in international organizations. Luka is working on fundraising a water irrigation system for his school, which is currently operating without a well or source of water.

A dedicated fighter for gender equality issues, he hopes to partner with the Maasai Girls Fund and other groups such as 4-H international to acquire organic seeds to give the local children access to better nutrition and food security by growing food in the school garden for their families. He hopes to grow these partnerships into an education, leadership and entrepreneurial program for Maasai children to learn to grow to sell the extra food under 4-H school garden programs.

G. Umaru Sheriff is the National Executive Director of 4-H Liberia and one of the key individuals that re-established 4-H in 2006, dedicated to teaching agriculture education and leadership to youth in Liberia.

4-H Liberia empowers young people to become self-sufficient citizens by developing their potential in premiere leadership, agricultural sustainability, and essential life skills. We believe that one of the best and most sustainable ways to develop young people is by empowering them in agriculture. The model that is used to train youth is School Based- Agricultural Education (SBAE).

4-H Liberia empowers young people to become self-sufficient citizens by developing their potential in premiere leadership, agricultural sustainability, and essential life skills. The acronym 4-H stands for Head, Heart, Hands and Health. It is one of the largest youth organization in the world but operates independently in each country.

James Menya grew up as an orphan, then dedicated his life to helping other orphans. He started God’s Will Child Care Orphanage, which houses about 30 children.

Unfortunately, the orphanage is next to a large swamp and malaria has broken out. James urgently needs $1,000 just to spray the swamp and get mosquito nets. He has lost two children to malaria and two more to a new strain of Ebola. Two more children have come done with malaria as of this writing.

His previous benefactor passed away and he is now relying on us. We would like to purchase a larger building, away from the swamp, with land for farming, to house his orphanage. This would cost as much as $10,000. With food, water, electricity, clothes, etc, their expenses are about $2,000 a month.

Raphael Kereto is part of the Pardamat Community of indigenous Maasai people living in southern Kenya, bordering Tanzania. The population is about 900.

Half of this community are below the poverty line and cannot afford meals and education. Initially this people depended on tourism activities to earn a living, but Covid, the drought and the Ukraine war have changed all that.

Raphael also works with the Pardamat School and helped to install a water tank there. He personally tends to 50 families or 250 people. Fifteen of the families are in dire straits.

He feels that $1,500 would solve emergencies, but $5,000 is really needed
