What we aim to solve
IN 2022, NEARLY 110,000 AMERICANS DIED OF AN OVERDOSE. In our current opioid crisis, it is estimated that up to 80% of those who are on the journey of recovery will relapse. Relapses are often catastrophic and can be fatal. Even with the strongest desires to stay sober, individuals who complete recovery programs - yet lack job skills and/or sufficient education - are highly likely to return to the community where they previously using and relapse. For most women who go through addiction recovery, there is no viable next step after they complete a recovery program. This leads to economic devastation and other circumstances that usher in a relapse. Our mission is to end the addiction relapse cycle that occurs due to the lack of safe community, financial resources, and employment opportunities for women in recovery.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Employment
The women of Unshattered make premium handbags from upcycled materials, including the original 1955 Mercedes-Benz upholstery, scrap from high-end design firms, and through their partnership with Southwest Airlines, upcycled leather seats from their planes. Unshattered invests in personal and professional development to help women move toward their highest level of success and contribution.
Unshattered teaches more than just sewing skills - the women learn skills such as design, marketing, sales, project/product management, and team leadership at each level of the program. Our work weeks include approximately four hours of personal and professional development to help women on their journey of wholeness.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Unshattered's mission is to end the addiction relapse cycle by providing pathways toward economic independence and sustained sobriety. We offer a path forward for those encumbered by the consequences of abuse, addiction, trafficking, or trauma. By providing job skills training and employment, Unshattered unveils talent, builds confidence, and provides professional and personal development that enables people to thrive in recovery. This has resulted in extraordinary sobriety rates for our employees, with 96% of our employees having sustained their sobriety long term! Having a pathway toward a better life is a key part of sustained recovery. The model of Unshattered is not just to employ women, but to create restorative justice. We deliver a robust personal and professional development curriculum during their paid work hours. This includes benefits such as therapeutic counseling, professional mentoring, and spiritual development. Not only are our team members able to walk away from their former life and choices, but they are able to achieve financial independence and thrive as contributing members of the community.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
The employment strategy of Unshattered focuses on pathways for sustained individual success. Unshattered creates an ecosystem in which the women, through their productivity, quality of work, and attitude, can create jobs for themselves. We provide job skills development and employment with an integrated personal development curriculum. Team members are paired with others who have successfully navigated the path to recovery and coached to their own maximum level of success. Additionally, they receive support such as therapeutic counseling during paid work hours. Unshattered focuses on restorative justice delivered through systems of support, restoration, and community reintegration.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Our organization is run by our founder who has 16 years of experience in the IT industry who left her job as an executive to begin Unshattered. This background provides a unique network of business discipline, donor support, and expertise that is often lacking in the nonprofit world. Our mission is executed by women who come from a life of homelessness, addiction, and prostitution but are becoming artists, entrepreneurs, and businesswomen. To address some of the skills the women have not yet established, our work weeks include approximately four hours of personal development where the women focus on building life skills in areas such as health, finance, relationships and spirituality. We engage a robust community of professional mentors and teachers who provide weekly education and support to our team members around topics such as healthy living, finances, creativity and more. Unshattered prioritizes the leadership and decisionmaking of lived-experience leaders - training them up into every role within the organization so that they craft and influence our programs and serve the women on the journey behind them.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Unshattered currently boasts a 96% long-term sobriety for their employees. 100% of employees who have been employed with the business for 12 months or more are living independently in our community. Our effective model has been recognized as far as the White House. Our premium products have been featured by Huffington Post, CBS, NBC, Fox News, Travel and Leisure and more. Our goal is to expand our proven model of employment and development by scaling our work and our impact through increased employment opportunities and a more robust suite of support services.
