Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Our most difficult challenge is funding our programs while keeping them free-of-charge to participants. MakeSmartCool, Inc. provides free services to low-income students because we believe equal access to quality education is a human right. However, as our services expand to meet the needs of our students, our monetary needs also expand. Creating new streams of income through grants and expanding our current donor base will allow us to continue to serve Washington D.C. and Maryland’s most vulnerable students.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Stem In Schools
● Road to Literacy Program: Students age six to 17 meet once a week at one of our partner sites across Washington, D.C and Maryland to engage in mentorship, community reading sessions, and team building activities. Through Road to Literacy, students are introduced to various forms of literature, expanding their vocabulary and enhancing their reading skills. Team building activities improve students’ communication skills and creates greater self-awareness in recognizing their strengths and weaknesses in a group setting.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
It is well documented that low-income students are among the least likely to pursue higher education. According to the most recent data available from the National Center for Education Statistics, the immediate college (2- or 4-year) enrollment rate for students from high-income families is still significantly higher than the rates for middle- and low-income families.
To combat this disparity, MakeSmartCool, Inc. primarily focuses on improving literacy, providing long-lasting mentorship, and assisting with educational funding. By focusing on these three areas, students who participate in our programs are provided with resources that make them competitive applicants when applying to a higher education institution just as their high-income counterparts.
