Mission

In many areas of the country, especially in the South, the situation for animals is desperate: Chained outside and starving, homeless and running loose, or just simply no longer wanted and abandoned in an overburdened and underfunded facility that can't possibly take another. For these animals, there is not much hope…except to look in the night sky for the North Star, their only way out. We are a group of passionate volunteers committed to saving these innocent dogs and finding them a new forever home.

What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

With respect to animal welfare and pet overpopulation, the United States is a tale of two countries. A country of wealth and opportunity, and a country of poverty and struggle. Wherever Americans are struggling, their pets are struggling as well. Lack of spaying and neutering in these communities leads to production of unwanted animals. In the warmer southern states, this production is not slowed by the cold winters of the northern states. Lack of funds for veterinary care leads to disease outbreaks, mange, and untreated injuries that make life miserable for many animals in these areas. And when the members of a community and animals are both struggling, the local government also struggles to manage to pet overpopulation problem. This often falls to the local police department to manage, or to a desperately underfunded and poorly equipped local "shelter" with a couple of unsanitary dog runs filled with dogs the community already discarded and thus have no hope for adoption.

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Save animals from Euthanasia in Texas

Our current focus area is the state of Texas. In many areas of Texas, 60-90% of the animals taken into public intake shelters are euthanized simply because there is not enough space and not enough local adopters. In our service area of NJ, NY, and PA, the demand for adoptable animals far outstrips the supply. We save animals from these overcrowded and desperate conditions and then place them into loving and forever homes.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Northstar Pet Rescue's goal is to assist shelters in struggling areas of the country to place the animals under their care. NorthStar is based in New Jersey. In the New York metropolitan area, there is a nearly insatiable demand for rescued dogs. Our goal is identify dogs in danger in these underfunded shelters, rescue them, and get them adopted into a loving local family. We aim to do this in a fiscally responsible, ethical, and transparent process following the highest standard of veterinary and transport care.

NorthStar is 100% volunteer based. We have a vibrant and large network of enthusiastic volunteers and fosters spread across the country. Our volunteers and fosters are the organization's "eyes and ears". These volunteers help the organization find animals that need help. Social media is a large part of this process, and has helped NorthStar establish "Rescue Partnerships" with many shelters in Texas. Becoming a rescue partner allows NorthStar to "pull" i.e rescue dogs from these shelters and place them into foster homes in Texas. We have also established working relationships with many veterinarians in Texas which offer reduced fees since NorthStar has a high volume of patients.

The founders of our rescue are well known in Texas after volunteering for Eleventh Hour Rescue in NJ for many years. After starting NorthStar, the organization hit the ground running full speed since all of these relationships with foster, volunteers, and donors were already in place. Few "new" organizations have the amount of experience that NorthStar can offer. The board of NorthStar is perfectly equipped for its mission. Besides the two founders with more than 10 years of rescue experience, Northstar's treasurer is retired CFO who managed the finances of Eleventh Hour Rescue for many years. NorthStar's other two board members include a experienced veterinarian who ensures the best standard of veterinary care is followed for all animals in the organization, and an attorney with extensive experience working for a non-profit.

NorthStar rescues between 300 and 350 dogs per year. We expect this number to increase as we continue to build our support base of volunteers and donors. In 2018 we launched our first annual “Strut your Mutt” event which we intend to grow into a signature event for our past adopters and the public. We also held our first annual “Mugs and Mutts” event in coordination with another local rescue. 2018 also saw the opening of our adoption center in Boonton, NJ. This space has made a huge difference in the visibility of our rescue. It provides a safe, happy, climate-controlled space for NorthStar to do “meet and greets” and process adoptions. We also use this space for adoption events and volunteer training. Our first-class social media presence continues to grow each year. In late 2018, the town of Boonton recognized the accomplishments of the founder of NorthStar Pet Rescue by awarding her “Boonton Citizen of the Year.”

Northstar’s five year plan includes investigating the possibility of opening a rescue facility for NorthStar dogs in Texas. This would allow us to rescue many more dogs since the amount of Texas fosters NorthStar has will always be a limiting factor. NorthStar is also investigating the costs of running a transport service for dogs from Texas to New Jersey that other rescues could also use.
