Mission

Global Fishing Watch is advancing ocean governance through increased transparency of human activity at sea. By creating and publicly sharing map visualizations, data and analysis tools, we enable scientific research and drive a transformation in how we manage our ocean. By 2030, we aim to monitor and visualize the impact of ocean-going vessels, both industrial and small-scale, that are responsible for the vast majority of the global seafood catch.

Research

Global Fishing Watch partners with leading scientific institutions to produce new data and analyses, and understand the most critical challenges facing our ocean. We connect machine learning experts with leaders in the scientific community to produce new open-source datasets, publish impactful research and empower others to use our data. Our collaborations contribute to discoveries and solutions critical to marine conservation, global economics and human welfare.

Population(s) Served
Adults

Global Fishing Watch is promoting transparency of ocean data towards a new era of ocean governance all over the world. We are working with countries to publish their vessel tracking data to our public map to strengthen monitoring, support enforcement and advance responsible fisheries management.

Population(s) Served
Adults

Just a decade ago, building an open-access picture of global fishing activity was impossible. But thanks to advances in satellite technology and machine learning, Global Fishing Watch is making it a reality. Our map is the first open-access online platform for visualization and analysis of human activity at sea. We are revolutionizing the ability to monitor commercial fishing, transshipment at sea, shipping and even forced labor abuses onboard vessels. Our data and technology portals enable scientific research, support marine protection, and improve the way the ocean is managed.

Data
  • We review compensation data across the organization (and by staff levels) to identify disparities by race.
Policies and processes
  • We seek individuals from various race backgrounds for board and executive director/CEO positions within our organization.
  • We help senior leadership understand how to be inclusive leaders with learning approaches that emphasize reflection, iteration, and adaptability.
  • We engage everyone, from the board to staff levels of the organization, in race equity work and ensure that individuals understand their roles in creating culture such that one’s race identity has no influence on how they fare within the organization.
