What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
At Rebility.org we know we are surrounded in our society by individuals dealing with disabilities large and small, anything from the loss of limbs to hearing impairment, and many challenges in between. Quite often, because they are “different" is some way, they have difficulty living what many of us consider normal lives, with regular jobs and opportunities for advancement, reliable transportation and affordable housing. Even though the often have abilities of many different kinds, they are frequently ignored, passed over and increasingly isolated. As a consequence, they can often become filled with a sense of hopelessness and despair. Through a combination of training and counseling, financial assistance to proper medical equipment, legal services, and outreach to potential employers; we seek to help challenged individuals, and their families, confront and overcome the obstacles they face, reconnect both with their abilities and with society, and become more productive and active participants to our community. In short, we seek to help our clients break down barriers, whatever those may be, and live their lives without limits!
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
In rendering assistance to individuals with disabilities in our community, our strategies include the following:
• Create counseling and training, or retraining, programs aimed specifically at promoting personal growth and a feeling of self-worth.
• Financial assistance to proper/more appropriate medical equipment or prosthetics.
• Assisting our clients in securing employment and becoming more productive citizens.
• Develop an extensive network of volunteers from a wide range of fields who can support and assist our counseling and training programs and possibly provide employment opportunities and/or career advancement.
• Inform our clients of their legal rights so that they can recognize discrimination, if they face it in the future, and be aware of ways to defend and protect themselves. Where appropriate, we will also help to arrange for legal assistance including pro bono services.
• Secure adequate funding for our various programs by securing financial support from foundations and private businesses interested in rendering assistance to individuals with disabilities.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Rebility.org is a nonprofit organization serving clients in the DFW area, having been granted our 501(c)3 tax status in November 2016. Thus, we will state some of the capabilities which we are in the process of developing.
• Our organization was founded through the efforts of business professionals and disability experts who, in addition to their regular fields of occupation, will provide appropriate counseling, advice and assistance to clients as needed.
• Through our personal networks, we are recruiting volunteers from a variety of fields to provide one-on-one mentoring, rehabilitation counseling and employment assistance to Rebility's clients.
• We are in the process of recruiting staff dedicated to providing first-rate client services while respecting and protecting the privacy of our clients.
• We also intend to prepare a five-year strategic plan setting both long-term and short-term goals for our organization.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
As we have stated, we are a relatively new organization and are still in our formative stage. With limited resources, we realize there are practical limitations to the size and scope of our projects. We do not seek funds, for example, for capital outlay projects that are and will be well beyond our capabilities. Instead, our intent is to find specific niches where there is are needs which we are capable of fulfilling. Hearing aids for the hearing impaired, wheelchairs or mobility upgrades, computer or other training for those needing such skills, housing and transportation assistance, and rehabilitation counseling are among the things we seek to provide so that, as we said, our clients truly can have a second chance to live without limits.
