What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
SOY Pittsburgh: Elementary School
SOY (Supporting Our Youth) Pittsburgh Elementary is the inaugural bilingual after school program of the Latino Community Center. SOY Pittsburgh Elementary is a K-5 after school program located in Beechwood Elementary School that exists to improve academic outcomes for Latino youth, while simultaneously building students’ pride in their native language and heritage. SOY Pittsburgh Elementary addresses 4 main goals: academic advancement, cultural empowerment, social-emotional development, and family engagement.
SOY Pittsburgh addresses academics by employing certified and experienced teachers, partnering with local universities, collaborating closely with Beechwood Elementary School staff, and utilizing student data to guide daily homework help and personalized tutoring time. This, along with the use of evidence-based online reading and math programs, allows SOY staff to track student academic data and help students improve their learning and grades. Finally, families are an integral part of SOY Pittsburgh. SOY staff hold quarterly parent meetings on topics of interest, attend parent-teacher conferences as interpreters and advocates, and act as liaisons to improve family engagement and communication within the school.
SOY Pittsburgh: Middle School
SOY (Supporting Our Youth) Pittsburgh Middle School is currently offered to Latino students in South Hills Middle School. Program goals are the same as SOY Pittsburgh Elementary School: academic advancement through personalized tutoring and homework support; cultural empowerment through bilingual instruction and cultural partnerships; social-emotional support through trauma-informed best practices and social-emotional learning activities like The Positivity Project; and family engagement through parent education and personalized support at school.
ParentChild+
ParentChild+ is LCC’s early childhood home visiting program. PC+ is an international, evidence-based model that is designed for children aged 2-4 and has been proven effective in immigrant communities. The program aims to break the cycle of poverty for families in underserved communities by helping parents engage with their toddlers early in life via early literacy and school readiness programming. Families participating in PC+ take part in 2 30-minute home visits each week that focus on interacting with an educational book or toy, which the family gets to keep in the home. This helps the child start to build their own home library for continued learning.
SOMOS Pittsburgh
SOMOS (Strengthening Outcomes, Motivating Our Students) Pittsburgh is LCC’s mentorship program. SOMOS Pittsburgh pairs students in grades 8-11 with Latino professional and university mentors in the local community. Mentoring pairs meet for a minimum of four hours per month to explore Pittsburgh, build positive relationships, and plan for the students’ successful future. SOMOS Pittsburgh provides a positive support system for participating students by connecting them with a Latino role model that they can look up to.
ALAS Pittsburgh
ALAS (Advancing Latino/a/x Academic Access for Success) Pittsburgh, LCC’s high school and post-secondary success program, currently supports students across Allegheny County in achieving their goals for the future. ALAS offers personalized support to students as they prepare for a successful future, whether that be applying for college, seeking financial aid, exploring career options, or requesting assistance with post-secondary goals.
In addition to the one-on-one support LCC’s Student Success Specialist provides, ALAS includes workshops tailored to meet the needs of this specific population of students. For example, workshops might address topics such as how to fill out the FAFSA and college applications, or skills exploration sessions to help choose a major or select the right career path.
Adult ESL
LCC’s Adult ESL classes are for learners who are new to the English language and seek to build their foundational skills and confidence in communicating at a basic level. LCC works closely with Literacy Pittsburgh to provide a comprehensive …. Of courses. Upon mastery of LCC’s beginner English courses, students will move forward into Literacy Pittsburgh’s next levels of English instruction to build upon their newly developed English language skills and grow in their language proficiency in all domains.
Drop-In Center
The Drop-In Center is located in the heart of the Cultural District in Downtown Pittsburgh. The Drop-In Center supports newly arrived or established Latinos by providing bilingual information on community resources and service providers.
Case Management
LCC offers expanded bilingual service coordination and case management to families needing support. This includes working with dedicated case managers who partner collaboratively with families to arrange, coordinate, monitor, evaluate, and advocate for services tailored to individual families' needs.
Community Health Workers (Promotor/Promotora)
In partnership with MHP-Salud, LCC offers a promotora model aimed to promote the health and wellbeing of Latino families in Pittsburgh. LCC’s promotors and promotoras live and work in the Latino community in Pittsburgh, ensuring that all Latinos have equitable access to services and the tools to implement a healthy lifestyle. Most importantly, our community health workers work to reduce the isolation many Latinos experience in our region.
Triple P Parenting Classes
The Triple P – Positive Parenting Program is one of the most effective evidence-based parenting programs in the world. Triple P gives parents simple and practical strategies to help them build strong, healthy relationships with their children that will contribute to a pleasant and productive family life at home. LCC’s Triple P Positive Parenting course series is ideal for any parent with children ages 0-18 who wants to learn to confidently support their child’s behavior while proactively preventing and addressing any developmental delays. LCC strives to reach 80 families per year through our various curriculums and maintain an 80% attendance rate per curriculum.
