Mission

CFL was founded in 2017, borne of a close knit collaboration between science teachers like myself and community member and neighbor Jim Lichon and many others. We connect the neighborhood to urban agriculture, build lasting relationships among neighbors and learn to grow our own food together. What makes us unique is that this is a FREE service for the community. About 100 community members grow organic food for their families every year. We teach and learn from each other, and offer free hands-on experience. As a science teacher, my students also have access to this 2 acre urban farm in a fenced and irrigated former soccer field. We raise chickens, keep bees, create soil, increase biodiversity and partner with many other like-minded grass roots community organizers. All are welcome!

Expanded FREE neighborhood growing beds and paid educational summer program for high school students

We received a 10,000.00 grant from Big Green last year which enabled us to expand our number of growing beds by 10, build a new communal tool shed and purchase soil, straw bales, tools, new wheel barrels and more. Our site will also become an official "One Summer Chicago" educational workshop this summer, serving 10-15 high school students who will be paid while they learn the real skills of urban farming.
