Mission

I teach Environmental Science and biology at a vocational school in Chicago. In 2017 I wanted to expand opportunities for the garden I started, so together with backyard farmer and school neighbor Jim Lichon, I created a non-profit entity separate from Chicago Public Schools to increase the fundraising capacity, vendor pool and community relationships called Chicago Farm Lab. We connect the neighborhood to urban agriculture. About 40 community members grow organic food for their families every year for FREE. We teach and learn from each other, and offer free hands-on experience.  As a science teacher, my students also have access to a 2 acre urban farm in this fenced and irrigated former soccer field. We model green jobs and grass roots community organizing.

Eco Bed Community Food Growing

Eco Garden Beds donated 44 of their raised beds to our garden. These are tall waist height raised hydroponic/top irrigated hybrid designed beds specifically made for differently abled and/or elderly people with limited mobility. We assembled them with our students in 2019 and now that the pandemic is subsiding, we plan to hook up the beds with a continuous watering system and grow more food.
