What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

The Ribe Project targets extreme poverty and the lack of opportunities available to women of northern Uganda. Women who are HIV positive, former abductees, or attempting to flee abuse are subject to stigma in the community. Jobs are not readily available for them. This situation affects their children in terms of poor nutrition and an inability to pay school fees.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

The Ribe Project offers vocational training programs for women in extreme need. Upon completion of the program, they have the choice of staying on with us as fair wage employees or using the wages they have earned while training, to use their newly learned skills elsewhere in the community.

Our strategies to increase the size and scope of our programs include continued efforts to increase support in the U.S. community. Methods to achieve this include a more robust campaign to recruit monthly donors, applying for and receiving applicable grants, and finding a sustainable U.S. market for the goods produced by our beneficiaries.

Our programs have remained small due to difficulty in funding. Our ultimate goal is to help a larger segment of the community at a future date. Funding is our biggest challenge and a current obstacle to increasing our range in the community.
Currently, we are maintaining production and were able to continue to pay salaries even during the Covid shutdown in Uganda to ensure the stability of our beneficiary families.

To date, we have been in operation for 18 months. Although progress has been slow, we are making progress in our goals;
In 2021 our first training program was initiated, training three local women in crafting handmade, paper bead jewelry. All three women chose to stay on as employees. Later that year we added two more trainees who also completed the program and are now full-time members of the Ribe Project family.
In 2022, we plan to offer a second vocation of Rafia basket making. This was chosen due to the demand for these baskets in the U.S. as well as in Uganda. Our graduates will be highly employable with this skill.
