What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Learn To Read Comics, Inc. is trying to address the inequities of learning, particularly prevalent in low-income communities, through the use of graphic novels and comic books. At risk students who are isolated in hospitals or in settings which do not promote learning, are at a higher chance of falling behind in their studies and these types of literature are a great way to get at risk students to become interested and engaged in the reading and learning process. While these types of books are fun to read, it cannot be overlooked that the motivation for learning to read is what we are trying to encourage. Through this motivation, an environment for learning can be cultivated.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Learn To Read Comics, Inc. is trying to encourage at risk students to learn to read through a medium which is both engaging and uses both visual and literal cues for learning to read. Learning to read not only opens up a world of literature, it encourages a life skill which will empower, enhance and help them achieve their full potential.

Learn To Read Comics, Inc.'s strategy for making our program successful encompasses reaching out to local hospital pediatric wards and afterschool programs in low income areas. Making connections with these programs is essential to building bridges between our organization and the students they serve. In addition, through those organizations, we also give presentations where the basics of reading and fundamentals of grammar are taught though interactive and engaging activities and lesson plans.

Learn To Read Comics, Inc. has a focused team which has designated departments which work on the different aspects of our mission. We have a department which focuses on outreach and cultivating new relationships with schools and hospital pediatric wards. We also have a fulfillment department which creates the bundles of supplies needed to send out to those organizations. Finally, we have a team which can facilitate in-person demonstrations and outreach to at risk students within their communities in classrooms, or at events such as street fairs and comic book centered events like Comic-Cons.

We are currently working with 2 local hospital pediatric wards, 2 after school programs and have put on approximately 12 events at those organizations. We have also been able to set up outreach activities at 4 community events where we were able to interact and distribute reading materials to at-risk students directly.
We have recently formed a new relationship with a local homeless shelter which caters to families and has set up in-house libraries for their school aged children and students to use. They have three houses which they utilize and over 50 students who will have access to these libraries. We are planning a donation of over 150 graphic novels and 300 comic books to support efforts at encouraging reading and learning. In addition, we strive to continuously work on connecting with other hospitals and afterschool programs in the future to further build our network and widen our outreach.
