TransAction South Dakota, Inc.
Transgender Support and Advocacy in South Dakota
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Annually we attend legislative sessions to lobby against anti-Transgender legislation. We work with other LGBTQ+ organization throughout the state of South Dakota to gain equality in school, jobs, housing, etc. To many organizations and politician have a tendency to spread fear and misinformation regarding transgender individuals, try to force public schools throughout the state to force transgender students to use the restrooms of the gender in which they were born, rather than the restroom of the gender they identify as. They try to make us out to be monsters, perverts, sex offenders and the like. It is our mission to educate the public, police departments, emergency personnel, community leaders and superintendents of school districts about who, what, and why we are who we are.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Our main goal is to bring awareness, education, and support for all transgender South Dakotan's through community outreach, coalition with LGBTQ+ organizations, national law centers, Human Rights Campaign, ACLU, and other organizations both on a local, state and national level. Our main goal is to reach transgender individuals residing in small towns and rural communities throughout the state. These people may believe that they are the only transgender people, and have no means of support, fellowship, or advocacy. We work to bring our programs and support to all transgender South Dakotan's, regardless of age, race, religion, or any other differences they may have.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We run name change clinics to help transgender individuals change their name and gender markers on their legal documents in order to have their identities align with their gender identity on drivers licenses or state ID, social security, birth certificates, passports, and other such legal documents in order for transgender individuals live more fulfilling lives. We run a web site at https://www.transactionsd.org where anyone can go to find information, resources, and to communicate with members of TransAction South Dakota, Inc, our support group, and other important information which may not otherwise be available. Our goal is to create a social media network where transgender, gender non-conforming, non-binary individual can go for support, fellowship and for a safe secure location where only people like themselves, and our allies, have access.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Through grants and fundraising efforts, we are able to reach out and hold events on a statewide basis. We work diligently to expand and improve our web site in order to reach as many individuals throughout the state as possible. To date we have made two trip across South Dakota to Rapid City to bring support, and to hold a name change clinic in July and August of 2017. We attend several Pride events each summer to bring awareness of our organization, the work we do, and to gain contacts throughout the state in order to be able to reach those in rural areas.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
We have helped 21 individuals change their legal documents to their preferred names along with their gender markers. Our website has been up for a few months and people have the ability to register for membership on the social end of our website, login, update profiles, request friendships with other members, have group and private messaging, and post/comment to blogs and forums.
