Generational Change, One Child at a Time

Detroit, MI   |  https://friendsdetroit.org/

Mission

The mission of our organization is to end generational poverty, one child at a time. We do this through an intense research-based mentoring program that pairs paid professional mentors 1:1 with some of the most vulnerable children in the community, starting from ages 4-6 years old, until they graduate from high school, 12+ years, no matter what! Our three long-term goals are to ensure that every child graduates from high school or obtains a GED; prevent entry into the juvenile justice system; and prevent teenage pregnancy. We have a more than 80% success rate in each long-term goal in our national network. Our model is estimated to have a $7 Return on Investment (ROI) for $1 invested, according to a study conducted by Harvard University.

Professional Mentoring

Paid professional mentors are paired 1:1 with children and they meet with them four hours a week (two inside the classroom and two outside the classroom) with the goal to end generational poverty. We select youth who are among the most vulnerable in the community and have experienced several adverse childhood experiences, such as witnessed or experienced abuse, foster care, or have a parent who is incarcerated or has some form of mental illness or substance abuse.

We work with students on goal setting aligned with five core values: School Success; Prosocial Development; Improved Health; Making Good Choices, and Plans & Skills for the Future.

Our three long-term outcomes for children are to ensure they graduate from high school or obtain a GED, prevent entry into the juvenile justice system, and prevent teenage pregnancy.
