What we aim to solve
73% of Maasai girls are survivors of FGM. Cutting is a human rights violation and act of violence against children. FGM is a cultural signal that a girl is eligible to be married. 28% of Maasai girls are forced to be married in exchange for a dowry before they reach the age of 18. Forced child marriage in exchange for payment by the dowry system is child trafficking that results in GBV. 28% of all girls in Narok County experienced their first pregnancy between the ages of 15 and 19. Teen pregnancy has devastating impacts on a girl’s dignity, agency, and potential.
Our programs

Flourish Kenya SRH Education Program
Our program is active in 50 upper primary and secondary schools in Narok County.
Flourish Kenya’s staff facilitates engaging and interactive sessions that cover the 12 extensive modules in our custom, holistic Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) Education Curriculum is culturally appropriate and combines science with Biblical Truth.
Crisis Intervention
Rescue services for children in danger of violent or harmful acts are centered on rehabilitative care and reintegration in accordance with best practices and Kenyan law.
Our vulnerable student sponsorship program is a key method of intervention. Preservation of education for children is a safeguard against harmful cultural practices.
Community Advocacy
Consistent presence paired with patient conversations and respectful education about the dangers of FGM and child marriage shapes how families and communities see and treat children.

What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Our mission is to eradicate Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), child marriage, and Gender-Based Violence (GBV) through community advocacy, crisis intervention, and Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) education.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Before Flourish Kenya, there were zero local programs on sexual and reproductive health and prevention. In our first few years as an organization, our focus has been working to fill that void. We provide holistic reproductive health education for schools, community groups, and churches through a partnership with local residents. The focus is on prevention through various practices beyond abstinence while still respecting established cultural and church values. Our facilitators spend time in each of our partner locations mentoring the youth regularly.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
We believe that our capacity to address these issues comes from deeply rooted connections throughout the region. We rely heavily on our Kenyan staff and board members to guide and support our work, trusting that their first-hand knowledge of the situation will lead to the most effective solutions. Our team comprises educators, pastors, and business owners, all of whom are passionate about helping us tackle this issue head-on.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
So far, 14,300 students, in 56 different schools, through 267 individual teaching sessions have received custom sexual and reproductive health education through Flourish Kenya. As that number continues to grow, we believe that we will see the unplanned pregnancy rate in rural Kenya decline.
Up next, we plan to build a safe house in Kilgoris, Kenya. Overwhelming poverty, deep cultural traditions, and taboos steeped in tribal spirituality cause some youth in these communities to make life-threatening decisions. Girls can be left to choose between living on the unsafe streets, seeking illegal and unsafe termination, forced early marriage, and even suicide. While it is always our hope for families to reach reconciliation through outreach counseling and for girls to remain in the family home, the reality is that it is not always safe for them to do so.
It is our dream for girls in this situation to have a safe and healthy place to stay where they can continue their education until community leaders can develop a plan that will allow them to thrive.
Additionally, one of our values as an organization is sustainability. It is our goal to become funded by in-country revenue streams as soon as possible.
