What we aim to solve
A disparity between students’ aspiration for postsecondary education and their lack of knowledge about college access. Findings from the Roadmap Project’s Student Aspiration & Expectation Survey show that approximately 95% of high school students in King County want to enroll in at least some college after graduation. In the past several years, Washington State has had an increasing decline in the amount of high school graduates enrolling in college. In 2016, only 59 percent of students enrolled in college directly after high school (Road Map Project Results Report, 2017). Many students also reported a lack of support from school staff to advise them on their post-high school plans. Although 79 percent of students want to pursue a four-year degree, only 48 percent of 11th grade are knowledgeable about the minimum requirements to apply to a four-year college in Washington.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Online College Mentorship
High school juniors and seniors who apply to our program are matched with one of our volunteer college mentors. Mentors are matched primarily based on career interests so that students can receive the best knowledge possible for their area of interest. Students and their mentors communicate directly via Facebook.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Mission Statement: To support underserved students in navigating pathways to college and career success.
In the short-term, we are trying to increase the number of college application completion, FAFSA completion, and scholarship application completion; we also aim to improve the quality of college application, increase the number of students who can identify their postsecondary plans and increase volunteer retention and alumni engagement.
In the long-term, we are dedicated to supporting students prepare for postsecondary institutions, be financially literate and able to meet the cost of college. We aim to help students enroll into a postsecondary institution and successfully completing a postsecondary program of study. We also concentrate on enhancing social network among students and first-generation college students.
Our ultimate goals are to reduce high school students’ barriers to enrolling in a postsecondary institute and increase college enrollment rate in Washington State.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
College Mentoring
Hey Mentor recruits our mentors from currently enrolled college students with diverse cultural backgrounds. Most of our mentors graduated from high schools in Washington State, and a majority of them are people of color and first-generation college students, which gives them insights and experiences similar to what their mentees face. Once a high school student is selected into the program, we ask them to list their intended major and career interests, which we use to match mentees with mentors.
Online Access
Hey Mentor empowers under-resourced high school students and their families with online college application mentoring services. Students can receive college admissions information and requirements by communicating directly with our mentors.
Workshops
Hey Mentor provides workshops for students for additional in-person support. Currently, we conduct our Mock Admission Day in May and our College Application Workshop in November to provide all students.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Program Highlights: College admission insight; low-cost online mentoring model.
Hey Mentor is launching the mobile app for the online mentoring in the coming year, which will greatly improve the capability of the mentors and enhance the communication between mentors and mentees. Hey Mentor is also staffed with people who have college admission insight and experience of college admission for students of color, low-income students, and first generation students. Furthermore, Hey Mentor actively recruits student ambassadors from the communities we serve to reach out to those communities and develop active strategies to receive feedbacks from students to improve our program.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Hey Mentor’s program is centered around students and measurable outcomes. Our student testimonials and success rates speak for itself. Hey Mentor students, on average, are accepted to and enroll in postsecondary institutions at higher rates than average students. We strive to prepare students based on admissions standards of the most selective university in the state (University of Washington, Seattle). In doing so, we believe that our students will work harder towards achieving their career aspirations.
