What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
The St. George Community Development Corporation has distinct goals for each of its community advised five pillars which are community development, economic development, housing, education, and wellness. However, the basis for each of these pillars and the organization at large is to lead and fund innovative projects that contribute to the resiliency of St. George and its villages while securing our distinct heritage and our evolving future.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Conversations. That is our best and biggest strategy for achieving our organizational goal of building resiliency. All of our projects, initiatives, and ideas come from the community. Our community advisory committee members are living, working and retiring in this community and they bring ideas, problems, and solutions that have grown from community-wide conversations. Once a project makes it to a committee, we look at it objectively, conduct research, have more conversations with more community members and determine if the project will better the resiliency of our community, if it preserves the heritage of our community and if it contributes to a thriving future for our residents.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
The St. George Community Development Corporation has a wide network of community volunteers who are ready to help, ready to lead, and ready to have open hearts, hands, and minds for their neighbors. Through our network of volunteers and our staff operations manager we are able to follow through on projects and reach the residents who will most benefit from these projects.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
As we are not even at our first year anniversary, we have made a lot of steps to building resiliency in our community. Some events include free diapers for families, Medicare review and enrollment assistance, Marketplace Insurance enrollment assistance, a support group for families and friends impacted by opioid use in the community, board leadership series for non-profits, the creation of a community job board for local employment, a free home tech diagnosis that is helping us to address the larger broadband issue in our community, free meals and food drives, collecting coats for seniors and more. Our biggest accomplishment to date is the creation of our community resources area which puts all the resources available from Federal, State, County and Municipal services at our office available to all community members. Making these connections with local organizations and bringing these services to our community is invaluable.
What's next, we have many more projects we are working on. Non-profit development series, back to school supply drive, winterization projects, co-housing projects, mobile clinic services and it is actually a quite extensive list. The future is wide open and we are here ready to listen to what the community needs.
