What we aim to solve
The Lambda Upsilon Sigma Charitable & Educational Foundation (LUSCEF) serves as the charitable arm of the Lambda Upsilon Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. Established in 2017, LUSCEF is a 501(c)(3) organization and is the primary funder of Lambda Upsilon Sigma’s service programs which focus on youth empowerment, health and wellness, and educational enrichment. LUSCEF also provides scholarships to deserving and exemplary college-bound high school seniors and continuing college students in North Texas.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Pearls of Promise Debutante Program
The Pearls of Promise Debutante Program is a major component of the Lambda Upsilon Sigma Rhoer Club, an affiliate of Sigma Gamma Rho for young ladies between the ages of 12 and 18. Established in 1939, the Rhoer Club was the vision of Sigma Gamma Rho Founder, Mary Lou Allison Little who had a passion for youth and the development of their full potential. Through the Rhoer Club, Sigma Gamma Rho provides training and guidance in education, community service, vocation, fine arts, and social affairs. The program also provides the young women with the energy, support, commitment, and encouragement of members of Sigma Gamma Rho to help them develop and succeed in their life’s endeavors.
The Pearls of Promise Debutante Program is an honors recognition program for exceptional young women who excel academically, serve as role models to their peers, and are future leaders of our community. It presents to college admissions officers and future employers that the applicant is active as a leader in her school and community, and is a highly respected individual who is committed to programs which serve others. Debutantes also develop a connection with a select group of women who are proven high achievers and invaluable resources for life. Through the program, debutantes undertake a six month long educational program focused on:
• Leadership Development
• Personal Development
• Networking
• Mentoring
Debutantes also engage in a bonding experience that provides a lifetime of invaluable access to sorority members and other debutante program alumna. The experiences of a debutante last a lifetime and the benefits are immeasurable.
Sigma Youth Symposium
Sponsored in conjunction with and in commemoration of Sigma Week, the Sigma Youth Symposium focuses on some of the prevalent concerns that negatively impact our youth: drugs, teen violence, abuse, low self-esteem, suicide, teen pregnancy, etc. Held on the second Saturday of March by each Alumnae Chapter, simultaneous Sigma Youth Symposiums address issues that affect teens today.
Operation BigBookBag
Sorority members make available, to selected facilities across the nation, bookbags, notebooks, writing and drawing paper, pencils and pens, dictionaries, thesauri, rulers, glue, construction paper, textbooks, encyclopedia, typewriters, computers and many other needed school items. Made available also through the efforts of both memberships is a nation-wide tutoring and mentoring program designed for the benefit of the children housed at said facilities.
The effective and overall implementation of OPERATION BigBookBag serves as an invaluable resource to the children by: (1) Affording children with quick and easy access to reference materials and other studying aids and tools that will help them in their educational endeavors; (2)Providing the children with the means of completing their homework assignments in order that they may remain current and up -to -date on course projects and requirements and (3) Assisting the shelters, centers, schools and hospitals in their efforts to meet some of the educational needs of the children and young adults housed at the facilities.
7 Days of Sigma
The 7 Days of Sigma is an initiative of Lambda Upsilon Sigma designed to impact the local community through seven impactful days of service with a focused agenda. The initiative impacts the following areas: Babies, Families, Seniors, Heritage, Women, and Youth. The initiative supports the Sorority's national and local partners.
Soles for Little Souls
Soles for Little Souls is an initiative of the partnership between Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. and the Sigma Public Education and Research (SPEAR) Foundation to provide new shoes to children in local homeless shelters. The goal of the national shoe drive, "Soles for Little Souls", is to give away 100,000 pairs of shoes to children in every community where Sigma Gamma Rho chapters exist.
