What we aim to solve
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Housing Navigation
We have a very personalized system for our small mountain communities. Each hotline call or "request for help" email is first answered by the hotline representative and then, if appropriate, passed on to our housing navigator. Potential clients do not get an answering machine or no reply, they get a real person, with real suggestions and compassion. When the true needs and plan for the client are determined, then possible actions might include:
- putting the homeless individual/household in temporary housing such as a hotel while working on next steps
- helping financially with move-in costs when a new rental is found
- paying back rent to prevent a client from being evicted
- referring to other organizations for counseling or domestic violence programs
- paying for gas so that a client can get to work
- providing a food card for the local grocery store
- arranging transportation to "off the mountain" government offices, DMV, courts, etc.
- helping them see the next steps to take
Georgia Street Cabins
Thanks to California's Project Homekey, Mountain Homeless Coalition, in partnership with the Housing Authority of San Bernardino County, purchased six cabins and two modulars that are dedicated to providing permanent housing to extremely low income (<30% of the median area income) residents in the Big Bear Lake area. Current residents were homeless clients of the Mountain Homeless Coalition and now have a nice place to call home. We are looking for additional units to purchase or master lease, as the lack of affordable rentals is one of the biggest causes of homelessness in the mountain region.
