What we aim to solve

SOURCE: Self-reported by organization

Approximately 7000 residents of Bexar County are newly diagnosed with cancer each year. According to recent studies published by the National Cancer Institute and British Medical Journal, up to 70% of cancer survivors experience depression, anxiety or PTSD, and cancer patients with higher levels of distress have a 32% greater risk of cancer mortality. Additionally, many family members who care for cancer patients experience decline in their own health. Currently, very little support is readily available for managing the adverse psychological effects of cancer treatment for patients, and even less resources are available for family members affected by cancer.

Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Music Moments

Music Moments provides weekly, 2-3 hour sessions of restorative live music in treatment rooms for patients and guests during chemotherapy to help them relax, tune out, and de-stress.

Music Moments was based on the knowledge that chemotherapy is associated with high levels of anxiety and stress, and the evidence that many cancer patients benefit from musical experiences.

Caregivers

Our Cancer Chronicles Writing Retreats are Intensive 2- day weekend workshops in which participants are guided by professional writers in crafting the story of their unique cancer journey, and then sharing their stories the next weekend in a private celebratory evening of storytelling and inspiring live musical selections. These workshops are free and open to anyone affected by cancer including patients, loved ones and providers, and occur quarterly.

Families

THE SIX is a unique show that celebrates the lives of 6 people who have been affected by cancer. Each year, through a community collaboration, six stories are selected, then artfully created into an onstage performance. The six stories are performed by professional actors, singers and dancers. All six stories are unique and have a significant influence on a family, a job, a church, a company or maybe just an individual. The one link that weaves the stories together is the fortitude in which they live, survive, and celebrate, even when affected by cancer. Each of their stories take the audience on an emotional journey of the honorees’ lives through a dramatic combination of storytelling, song and dance. THE SIX is an uplifting and energetic night of entertainment that helps heal the emotional wounds of those affected by cancer.
