Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Survivors Empowered goals are to provide a soft place to land for survivors of gun violence after they have been affected by gun violence. Our organization was formed after the daughter of Sandy and Lonnie Phillips was killed along with eleven others in the theater massacre in Aurora, Colorado, in 2012. Survivors Empowered has been on the ground in the immediate aftermath of 21 public mass shootings. We partner with local grassroots organizations and trauma therapists to help survivors of violence cope with the trauma associated with the death of a family member or close friend who has died in a violent and public way. Survivors Empowered has collaborated with the University of California at San Diego to develop a program designed specifically to study mindfulness stress reduction techniques' effects on survivors of gun violence. In conjunction with the University of California at San Diego, Survivors Empowered implemented the first-of-its-kind mindfulness training classes conducted over the zoom platform.
The future goals of Survivors Empowered are to continue providing information and resources for survivors through our online Survivors Tool Kit and Survivors Handbook from day one and for years to come. Our plans for the future include providing a peaceful setting where survivors can retreat from their daily routines and find comfort by practicing mindfulness with others.

Survivors Empowered 2030 sustainable development goals are aligned with peace, justice, and vital institutions that can substantially reduce the scourge of preventable gun violence that is disproportionately killing the youth of our country. Survivors Empowered has successfully lobbied local, state, and federal legislators to pass laws contributing to a safer environment for all Americans. Our strategy in the future is to build on our successes of the past and add new dimensions to our efforts to comfort and heal those survivors of violence through new and innovative mental health strategies designed specifically for victims of gun violence.
