Pengins For Everyone

Stuffed Penguins Bringing Smiles

Florence, AZ   |  https://penginsforeveryone.com

Mission

We are a family who loves stuffed penguins, or, as we say, "pengins." Once we got up to about, oh, several dozen of them, we realized we had to stop acquiring more of our own, so we decided to spread the love. What started as a few gifts to Toys for Tots and local children in the hospital has turned into an international effort with more than 20,000 requests received to date, and more than 1,000 given. At the start, we funded the project entirely through our own spare cash, and in June 2017, we began accepting public donations. We were approved as a 501(c)(3) effective October 2017 and are looking forward to finding new ways to get more pengins out to new homes.

What we aim to solve

Do you know how few people have a stuffed penguin? It's novel, and it almost always makes someone smile to see one. Is it a "problem" that not everyone has a stuffed penguin? Not in the grand scheme of things, for sure. But are there plenty of problems in the world that could be made a bit easier to bear with a stuffed friend to hold through them? Probably, and that's what we're trying to do.

Our programs

What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?

Pengins for Everyone

Our sole program is an effort to provide small stuffed penguins to anyone who requests them, prioritized based on the need listed with the request. We focus on the United States but also have received many requests internationally and work very hard to meet those when we are able to fund them.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

Pengins for Everyone is a group dedicated to sending stuffed pengins to where they're needed. Nothing fancy; we just do one thing. We get donations and use our own money; we acquire stuffed penguins, or as we say, "pengins," from a manufacturer who will sell them to us at wholesale prices; we buy boxes; we buy postage; we mail pengins to people who could use something to help brighten their day.

We fundraise largely through word of mouth. One of the biggest ways we get donations is from someone who knows someone who's received a pengin. Similarly, while we collect information on potential recipients through an online form (which has received more than 20,000 submissions in the past two years), most of our priority requests come from people who have learned about the mission through someone else having received one, and who think they know someone whose needs fit our goal. By sending penguins across the country (and world), we've had a huge reach, including donations from multiple countries. We've also had numerous people host Facebook birthday fundraisers for us, held local in-person fundraising events and asked for donations in lieu of wedding presents. We're just that excited about sending penguins.

We've been able to fundraise about $2,000 or a little less in the past year, and all of that money has gone toward purchasing penguins, boxes or postage. As we're just a family, not a big organization, we don't have the capacity to ship and send hundreds of pengins a week, but we like keeping it small. We try to send at least a dozen pengins a month, and slowly but surely, we've sent more than 750!

We have taken what was a spur-of-the-moment set of Toys for Tots purchases and turned it into a registered nonprofit that has legitimately helped people and received support from people all around the world - one stuffed animal at a time, to the tune of more than 750 so far. Our "big goal" is to send pengins to the 1,300 or so people we've identified as "priority" requests sometime over the next several years. More would be great, but that's the most we can dream of.
