Health Science and Research

Helping people who smoke switch away from combustible and other lethal forms of tobacco use is of crucial public health importance. In determining research priorities, Global Action considers the broad spectrum of ongoing, global research to identify important gaps in knowledge, with an emphasis on marginalized and diverse communities and within low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).
Global Action focuses on research associated with smoking cessation, including the potential role of alternative, non-combustible, reduced-risk products.

The global decline of smoking could have many positive health impacts but could bring negative economic consequences to tobacco farmers, many of whom are in developing nations. To address the potential negative agricultural impact of smoking cessation, Global Action is focused on partnering with agricultural, rural development, and smallholder representatives and individuals to identify alternative livelihoods for tobacco farmers.

We are committed to ensuring that people who smoke and their health care providers have holistic evidence-informed information on all the ways to quit smoking. We fund innovative research and disseminate up-to-date guidance from leading health authorities to correct widespread misunderstanding in this complex area. The work we fund raises awareness of the many smoking cessation strategies and tools available to help people stop smoking and live healthier and longer lives.
Global Action supports and brings attention to research that focuses on bringing cessation information to a wide range of communities and health care professionals.

Charting impact

Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.

We are committed to improving global health by supporting people who smoke, health care professionals, and others by providing information that advances their scientific understanding of cessation solutions.

Global Action to End Smoking aims to reduce tobacco harm and promote public health through several key strategies. We fund and conduct health and science research to understand the impacts of nicotine products and develop cessation methods. Educational programs are provided to support individuals in quitting smoking. The organization also aids farmers in transitioning from tobacco cultivation to alternative crops. Additionally, our work to ensure the availability of reduced-risk products globally, emphasizing equitable access in both high-income and low-middle-income countries. These combined efforts aim to transform the tobacco industry and achieve an end to smoking.

The Organization possesses several key capabilities and resources to help achieve its mission of ending smoking and tobacco use. The Organization has a team of experts with experience in scientific research, public health, and tobacco control, who can provide guidance on research strategy and design. It also has established partnerships with academic institutions, NGOs, and other stakeholders to conduct research and implement programs to end smoking and tobacco use.
The Organization's communication and outreach capabilities are also strong, with a focus on disseminating research findings, educating the public, and engaging other stakeholders. The organization has developed innovative tools and platforms to support its mission, such as the Agricultural Transformation Initiative.

Since its inception in 2017, the Organization has made significant strides in advancing its mission to accelerate global progress towards ending smoking. In terms of research, the Organization has established partnerships with leading scientific and academic institutions around the world, and has funded a wide range of studies focused on smoking cessation and tobacco harm reduction. These studies have contributed to our understanding of the risks associated with traditional tobacco products and the potential benefits of reduced-risk products (RRPs). The Organization has also been active in supporting initiatives to reduce the harms associated with tobacco use, including efforts to reduce smoking rates among marginalized and underserved populations.
The Organization has also worked to promote sustainable alternatives to tobacco farming, particularly in Malawi, one of the world’s most tobacco-dependent economies. Its grantmaking in Malawi has supported programs and initiatives aimed at helping smallholder farmers diversify their crops and achieve sustainable livelihoods.
Despite facing significant challenges, the Organization has remained committed to its goal of creating a world free from the harms of smoking and tobacco use. Its efforts to promote harm reduction and reduce the prevalence of traditional tobacco products have the potential to save millions of lives in the coming years.
