What we aim to solve
With an already unprecedented appreciation of housing values in Monroe County Florida, followed by a category 4 hurricane destroying over 4000 of the least resilient single family homes here, the failure of our state's "Rebuild Florida" program has resulted in a Florida Keys housing crisis beyond measurable proportions. Following the Community Land Trust formula, as implemented by private benefactors, was designed and intended to be a relatively straightforward solution for rapid reconstruction of single family workforce homes in the Keys. Yet with only four all new, hurricane resistant Keys Cottages finished and rented, the problem and the need still very much exist today. Though the Florida Keys Community Land Trust achievements are quite positive, they have made very little impact in the large scale devastation of long term recovery. Why, you ask? "In a word, money! It doesn't grow on trees and neither do houses," responds Keys CLT Founder, Maggie Whitcomb, with tongue in cheek.
Our programs
What are the organization's current programs, how do they measure success, and who do the programs serve?
Affordable Workforce Housing
The hardest hit areas by Hurricane Irma were those in the very neighborhoods where service and hourly workers could afford to live. The majority of those displaced are teachers, police officers, servers, cashiers, firefighters, ambulance drivers, hourly workers and the like – the very people who make the Keys work. They lost their friends, their jobs, their homes and their dreams. Some have found alternative housing arrangements by doubling up with others, or in trailers as the costs of rebuilding are astronomical.
