The Amber Reineck House
Programs and results
What we aim to solve
After losing her sister to a fentanyl overdose in December 2015, Courtney Atsalakis became motivated to make sense of her sister’s avoidable death. While collaborating with Home of New Vision as a Board Member, she became aware of the difficulty of finding affordable properties for those committed to long term recovery, getting zoning approval, and community acceptance. She became determined to open a recovery home in memory of her sister, Amber Reineck. This home will be used to support Home of New Vision’s programs and clients, to help people recovering from substance use disorders create a better vision for their future. The current opioid crisis is responsible for 100000+ deaths a year. Educating the community about the disease of addiction and the benefits of a long-term managed recovery home can help eliminate the stigma that prevents so many from seeking treatment, and prevents them from having the support of family, friends and the community as they seek long-term recovery.

Participating in, and creating events that educate and bring awareness to the opioid crisis, the stigma associated with addiction and the problem of finding affordable housing to be used for those committed to long-term recovery.

What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
Through our annual fund raising gala and private donations we raised money for acquiring and maintaining property. We have received community support in the idea of bringing a long term recovery home to the area. We have received donations for furnishings in our home, raised money for scholarships for those in the county seeking sober living, and for a weekly support group.
Amber Reineck's story has been shared at numerous events by her sister, Courtney Atsalakis and by Amber's teen daughter, Justice. Their speeches have been viewed on social media and their story has been featured on Detroit news stations. Some members of our board have also lost children to addiction and have publicly shared their story at events and on social media to bring awareness.
We have partnered with Home of New Vision, an established recovery services provider in Ann Arbor, MI, where Courtney Atsalakis serves on the board of directors, and also with other non-profits in Livingston County who align with our goals.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
Amber Reineck House has purchased a beautiful 5 BR home that is within walking distances of employment and county services. We have received donations for furnishings for the home. Through donations, our home is mortgage free. All donations and fund raising will be used to provide on going maintenance and expenses associated with the home and raise funds for future purchases to keep the house updated. We currently rent the home to Home of New Vision in Ann Arbor, who manages it and places women in recovery there. We promote education to eliminate the stigma that surrounds the community about the disease of addiction & long-term recovery. We host Overdose Awareness Day each August 31st in our local community to bring awareness. We held a NARCAN Training class and joined forces to promote awareness with other non-profit organizations in the community and state. We assisted with the purchase of a jail dog for Livingston County Sheriff department which is used to sniff out contraband drugs in the jail. We provide funding to a weekly Friends and Family support group that provides support to those who have a loved one that is struggling with addiction.
We are aligning our programming with Home of New Vision to encourage sober events for the residents and the community.
