What we aim to solve
In Texas, there are a large numbers of stray or unwanted dogs, and a significant number of them are Border Collies or Border Collie mixes. Because of their intelligence, intensity, and drive to work, Border Collies are often abandoned or given up because their owners are not able or willing to learn how to manage their traits. Border Collie Save and Rescue, Inc. (BCSAVE) is committed to helping these families and these pups find homes that understand and can appropriately care for a Border Collie.

What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
Border Collie Save and Rescue, Inc. is an all volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable dog rescue dedicated to helping border collies throughout Central and North Texas. Our actions revolve around rescuing, rehabbing, and re-homing border collies. This includes taking in border collies and border collie mixes who are in toxic and/or desperate situations. We place them into foster homes, where we tend to all of their medical needs, spay/neuter them, begin any needed physical and mental rehabilitation, start some basic training, and provide them with a loving & save place to live. Finally, we place them with appropriate and vetted adopters who fully meet the needs of the individual dog.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
Our dogs come from all over. Many of these dogs are turned over to animal shelters through no fault of their own, often because their previous owners found themselves unable to handle the challenges Border Collies offer. Other times, owners will reach out to us to surrender their dog because changes in their lives left them unable to properly care for their dogs. We often work with other rescues who are wanting to transfer their Border Collies to a breed-specific rescue such as ours to give the Border Collie a better chance at a forever home. Lastly, we have a network of volunteers that reach out to us if they find a Border Collie in need and hope to avoid placing a dog into a shelter by bringing to us. Whatever the reason, we will do what we can to either bring the dog into our rescue or help place it with another partner rescue who can help with the ultimate goal of finding each dog the perfect home for the rest of its life.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
All of our Board members and volunteers are familiar with Border Collies, and most (if not all), have owned or currently own Border Collies, so we are personally aware of the various challenges that come with the breed. We work closely with different fosters with specific areas of training specialty for our higher drive dogs to determine what is the best home life environment for them, and for extremely difficult cases, we work closely with trained and licensed veterinarians and behaviorists to determine the best outcomes for each and every dog.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
We are a young organization, but in our first year (2018), we rescued and adopted eight dogs. In 2019, we rescued 83 dogs and adopted out 59. So far in 2020, we have rescued 105 dogs and have adopted 74, and there are three months left in the year.
