Programs and results
What we aim to solve
Mangochi, Malawi has a population of approximately 1.2 million people. Of the total population, 260,000 children are primary school age but only 16% of these children complete primary school. For girls, this statistic drops to 13%, as they drop out due to early marriages or parents that fail to pay their school fees. Mangochi has a drop out rate of 6.7% yearly. Many boys drop out of school to fish and contribute to the family income. Unfortunately, the percentage of females and males aged 25+ years that have some secondary education in Malawi is 39.2% and 58.2% respectively. These are among the worst education statistics of sub-Saharan Africa. At RiseUp Malawi we believe that education is a critical component of human development because of the critical role of knowledge in expanding opportunities and capabilities. Poverty isn't just an income inequality- it's opportunity inequality.

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
We are trying to increase access to educational opportunities in Malawi for youth. Equipped with the right knowledge, our mission is to empower the younger generation to be able to rise above the critical poverty line and look forward to a future of self-reliance, and not dependence on hand-outs from others.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
We have four intervention points: a free afterschool computer skills, English language and life skills program, secondary school cholarship opportunities, a music program to provide a safe space for our students to talk about and educate themselves on certain social issues like HIV/AIDS and child marriages, and a farming training program for the parents of our students to combat hunger crises that prevent our students from learning.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
We have a team of 4 Malawians that are leading our programs on the ground, a safe space in which to run our programs, consistent donors, and a good relationship with village elders so that our programs address the real (and not just the perceived) needs of the community.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
We currently have 10 youth on secondary school scholarship, with the first scholarship student about to complete her four years of secondary school and begin applying to university. We have 14 youth in our after-school program, 10 in our music program and 11 parents who just completed our first farming training program. This year we are launching a capital development campaign to build a a new community building- a Center for Knowledge-in which to house our growing programs and provide a space for income generating activities in the community.
